This Reagan Republican is not amused

Campaigning in northwest Ohio this week, Speaker Mike Johnson took a shot at long-tenured Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, saying, “I love the [Ronald] Reagan years, but I don’t want to be serving with somebody who was there during the Reagan years.”

One issue: There are two sitting Republicans who served under Reagan — Reps. Hal Rogers of Kentucky and Chris Smith of New Jersey.

Smith, who is now seeking a 24th term, told reporters Thursday he hadn’t heard Johnson’s comments but defended his record of legislative accomplishments as well as Reagan’s honor.

“I don’t know why he said that,” Smith said, laughing. “I love Ronald Reagan. He was amazing.”
