{"id":9946,"date":"2025-06-05T15:48:25","date_gmt":"2025-06-05T15:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/thune-on-ai-moratorium-well-see-if-it-survives-byrd-rule\/"},"modified":"2025-06-05T15:48:25","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T15:48:25","slug":"thune-on-ai-moratorium-well-see-if-it-survives-byrd-rule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/thune-on-ai-moratorium-well-see-if-it-survives-byrd-rule\/","title":{"rendered":"Thune on AI moratorium: \u2018We\u2019ll see\u2019 if it survives Byrd rule"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> sounded supportive Thursday of the House-passed 10-year moratorium on enforcing state and local artificial intelligence laws, but conceded it remained an open question if it would comply with the chamber\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat issue got fairly carefully litigated in the House,\u201d Thune said in response to a question from Blue Light News. \u201cThe goal is to make sure that we aren&#8217;t losing the race in AI and making sure that we have a policy that&#8217;s consistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, when asked whether the moratorium would comply with the chamber\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/30\/megabill-policies-senate-parliamentarian-byrd-rule-00375507\" target=\"_blank\">Byrd rule<\/a>, which blocks anything but budgetary issues from inclusion in reconciliation, Thune said: \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune\u2019s measured support for the state AI law freeze was his first comment on the provision that has triggered opposition from some Republicans, including Sens.<a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51279\" data-person-id=\"51279\"> Marsha Blackburn<\/a> (R-Tenn.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/307631\" data-person-id=\"307631\">Josh Hawley<\/a> (R-Mo.), as well as Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/337881\" data-person-id=\"337881\">Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/a> (R-Ga.).<\/p>\n<p>Democrats, led by Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51500\" data-person-id=\"51500\">Ed Markey<\/a> (D-Mass.), have <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2025\/06\/markey-says-he-will-challenge-state-ai-moratorium-00382265?site=pro&amp;prod=alert&amp;prodname=alertmail&amp;linktype=headline&amp;source=email\" target=\"_blank\">vowed to challenge the provision<\/a> as the <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_1\" target=\"_blank\">legislation<\/a> advances.
