Donald Trump<\/a> found common ground with a Democrat at a New York City charity event on Thursday night, commiserating with the city\u2019s deeply unpopular<\/a> mayor, Eric Adams<\/a>, who also faces a federal criminal indictment<\/a>, over what Trump claimed was their victimization by a weaponized Justice Department.<\/p>\n

In remarks at the Al Smith Dinner, Trump said, \u201cI just want to be nice, because I know what it\u2019s like to be persecuted by the DOJ for speaking out against open borders,\u201d in reference to Adams, who was in attendance. \u201cWe were persecuted, Eric. I was persecuted, and so were you, Eric.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump wished Adams \u201cgood luck,\u201d as the mayor, sitting to the right of the podium, grinned. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey went after you, mayor. Oh boy, I knew that, nine and a half months ago I said … \u2018He just said something about it, about the administration, he\u2019s going to be indicted any moment,\u2019\u201d Trump said, alluding to Adams\u2019 criticism <\/a>of President Joe Biden\u2019s handling of the border. \u201cAnd guess what happened? But you\u2019re gonna win, I think you\u2019re gonna win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has often falsely claimed that the Biden administration has weaponized the Justice Department<\/a> against him in order to hurt his presidential campaign. (Trump is charged with 44 felony counts<\/a> in two separate federal cases related to his retention of classified documents and to his role in the Jan. 6 assault on Congress<\/a>; he has pleaded not guilty.) Adams has also suggested, without evidence, that he was indicted on federal bribery and campaign finance offenses because he criticized Biden\u2019s immigration policies<\/a>. (Adams has also pleaded not guilty to all charges.)<\/p>\n
