Elon Musk\u2019s bashing of President Donald Trump\u2019s megabill sparked some conflict<\/a> with congressional Republicans. But some deficit hawks were thrilled.<\/p>\n

Several hard-liners rejoiced at Musk\u2019s comments on X on Tuesday \u2014 calling the House-passed GOP megabill a \u201cmassive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill\u201d and a \u201cdisgusting abomination<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese numbers are nothing short of stunning,\u201d Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) responded<\/a>. \u201cCongress has hollowed out America\u2019s middle class through reckless deficit spending and the inflation it causes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has reiterated his opposition to the bill, said to reporters on Tuesday that Musk \u201chas some of the same skepticism\u201d as him that the bill is \u201cjust not conservative.\u201d<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s comments came less than two weeks after Speaker Mike Johnson carefully threaded the GOP megabill through his razor-thin majority. He managed to garner enough support from conservative hard-liners concerned over the bill’s multi-trillion-dollar deficit impact. But Musk\u2019s comments reignited the conversation as the bill heads to the Senate.<\/p>\n

The two hard-right House Republicans who voted against the bill quickly praised Musk for speaking out. Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) called Musk\u2019s post \u201cThe Big Beautiful Tweet,\u201d<\/a> while Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) responded, \u201cHe\u2019s right.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

But most Republican senators \u2014 even very conservative ones \u2014 didn’t appear to share Musk\u2019s assessment that the bill was hopeless. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said he believed it would be salvageable with some adjustments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the Senate should make the bill substantially better, and I hope and believe we’ll do that,\u201d Cruz said.<\/p>\n

Any opponents will have to face Trump, who has already publicly bashed Paul and Massie on Truth Social for their prior comments. The president is pushing for the bill to pass with components, such as raising the debt ceiling and border wall spending, that the members have criticized.<\/p>\n
