The two Republicans said it will target NPR and PBS, as well as foreign aid agencies that have already been gutted by President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Mike Johnson <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SpeakerJohnson\/status\/1927749395363045819\" target=\"_blank\"><u>said on X Wednesday<\/u><\/a> that the House \u201cis eager and ready to act on DOGE\u2019s findings so we can deliver even more cuts to big government that President Trump wants and the American people demand.\u201d He said the House \u201cwill act quickly\u201d on a package without saying when it might be submitted or what it might contain.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on Capitol Hill have been growing impatient as they await the White House request, after the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/04\/14\/white-house-to-send-congress-a-formal-request-to-nix-9-3b-for-pbs-state-department-00289543\" target=\"_blank\"><u>confirmed more than six weeks ago<\/u><\/a> that it intended to send a more than $9 billion package of proposed cutbacks.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether the forthcoming submission will meet that target, which is itself a tiny fraction of the $1.6 trillion in yearly discretionary spending. The White House budget office did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve all said that we\u2019re anxious to act on rescissions packages and hope they find a way to send them up,\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in a brief interview last week before lawmakers left town for a weeklong recess.<\/p>\n<p>An online pressure campaign aimed at \u201ccodifying\u201d the DOGE cuts has gained steam in recent days, pushed by Musk-friendly Republicans including <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BasedMikeLee\/status\/1927459654646612461\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Utah Sen. Mike Lee<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RonDeSantis\/status\/1927356589041656298\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis<\/u><\/a>. Many MAGA influencers on Musk\u2019s X platform have amplified the effort.<\/p>\n<p>In a CBS News interview Tuesday, Musk himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/27\/musk-says-hes-disappointed-with-trump-backed-megabill-00372048\" target=\"_blank\"><u>criticized the \u201cone big, beautiful bill\u201d<\/u><\/a> backed by Trump that just narrowly cleared the House last week and is headed for the Senate. Musk said he \u201cwas disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit \u2026 and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.\u201d \u201cA bill can be big or it can be beautiful,\u201d Musk said in a clip of the interview published Tuesday night. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know if it can be both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s top policy aide, deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StephenM\/status\/1927572082780520465\" target=\"_blank\"><u>responded to Musk<\/u><\/a> in a late-night X post noting that the cuts Musk has been seeking could not be done in the GOP megabill but instead \u201cwould have to be done through what is known as a rescissions package or an appropriations bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senior Republicans informed some House GOP members the rescissions package would finally be coming hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it can pass is a separate question: Republicans have debated possible DOGE-inspired rescissions for months, and GOP leaders have been sensitive to the fact that some pieces may have trouble passing the House, according to two other Republicans granted anonymity to discuss the matter, as well as the tight 45-day timeline for consideration set out in federal law. Top appropriators have sought to weigh in ahead of any White House submission to ensure the package can pass.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/05\/elon-musk-senate-meeting-doge-cuts-00214483\" target=\"_blank\"><u>first pressed Musk almost three months ago<\/u><\/a> to get Trump to pursue clawbacks, is frustrated that the Trump administration had not sent a package sooner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very disappointed \u2014 not only in the White House, but disappointed in Congress,\u201d Paul said in a brief interview last week. \u201cIf Congress can\u2019t cut $9 billion, I think most of them should resign and go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The White House plans to send a small package of spending cuts to Congress next week, senior GOP officials told several House Republicans Wednesday.
