There was no leverage point that we could&#8217;ve \u2014 we could&#8217;ve asked for things, they just would&#8217;ve said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi \u2014 a longtime ally of Schumer \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/18\/pelosi-shivs-schumer-dont-give-away-anything-for-nothing-00237661\" target=\"_blank\"><u>had taken aim at the minority leader\u2019s move<\/u><\/a> last week, accusing him of giving ground to Republicans without demanding anything in return. \u201cI myself don\u2019t give away anything for nothing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer and a small group of other Democrats\u2019 decision to vote in favor of the continuing resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/19\/schumer-bashing-has-gone-mainstream-00237901\" target=\"_blank\"><u>has sparked backlash from members of their party<\/u><\/a> who argue Democrats capitulated on key priorities. Schumer, however, has held firm, repeatedly asserting that a shutdown would have handed President Donald Trump and his allies an opening to continue gutting the federal bureaucracy.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer&#8217;s decision to support the GOP bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/21\/james-blair-midterms-running-angry-00242217\" target=\"_blank\">drew praise from Trump<\/a>, who said Schumer had &#8220;guts&#8221; and &#8220;did the right thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the clash, Pelosi said she continues to support Schumer \u2014 a stance that contrasts with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/18\/glenn-ivey-chuck-schumer-00237829\" target=\"_blank\"><u>growing murmurs within the Democratic Party<\/u><\/a> about whether Schumer should step down from his leadership role.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/03\/20\/michael-bennet-chuck-schumer-leadership-026834\" target=\"_blank\"><u>recently declined to explicitly call for Schumer<\/u><\/a> to step aside as Senate minority leader, but highlighted echoes of the party&#8217;s internal struggle last summer over former President Joe Biden\u2019s candidacy.
