{"id":5985,"date":"2025-02-10T17:03:58","date_gmt":"2025-02-10T17:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/schumer-signals-democrats-wont-pick-a-shutdown-fight\/"},"modified":"2025-02-10T17:03:58","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T17:03:58","slug":"schumer-signals-democrats-wont-pick-a-shutdown-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/schumer-signals-democrats-wont-pick-a-shutdown-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"Schumer signals Democrats won\u2019t pick a shutdown fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Senate Democrats are detailing how they plan to fight back against President Donald Trump\u2019s administration \u2014 but it won\u2019t include sparking a government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000194-f09e-d1d6-a9dc-f9de9c380000\" target=\"_blank\">sent a \u201cDear Colleague\u201d letter<\/a> to his caucus on Monday that detailed four strategies to counter Trump: investigations, litigation through the courts, legislation and party messaging.<\/p>\n<p>However, Schumer pushed back against recent rumblings that Democrats might walk away from the negotiating table on spending bills, saying his party wants to avoid a \u201cTrump shutdown\u201d and supports bipartisan negotiations to try to find a funding deal. Republicans had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/02\/07\/congress\/mike-johnson-shutdown-threat-00203080\" target=\"_blank\">accused Democrats of walking out<\/a> on talks last week and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/02\/09\/kim-trump-government-shutdown-00203267\" target=\"_blank\">some of Schumer\u2019s members are warning<\/a> the GOP can\u2019t count on their votes to avert a shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats stand ready to support legislation that will prevent a government shutdown. Congressional Republicans, despite their bluster, know full well that governing requires bipartisan negotiation and cooperation,\u201d Schumer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, legislation in the Senate requires 60 votes and Senate Democrats will use our votes to help steady the ship for the American people in these turbulent times. It is incumbent on responsible Republicans to get serious and work in a bipartisan fashion to avoid a Trump Shutdown,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans will need at least seven Democrats to get a government funding bill through their chamber. And while Speaker Mike Johnson could get legislation through the House without support across the aisle, he\u2019s been forced to cut a deal with Democrats on spending repeatedly because of divisions among his own members.<\/p>\n<p>But Democrats are facing intense pressure to jam up the Senate and fight Trump\u2019s policies, including Elon Musk\u2019s efforts to take a buzzsaw to the federal workforce and multiple agencies.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to opposing Trump\u2019s most controversial nominees, Schumer said in his letter on Monday that Senate Democrats will hold unofficial hearings to \u201cspotlight \u2026 the rampant wrongdoing of the Trump administration.\u201d Senate Democrats also launched a portal where whistleblowers can flag problems on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats are also supporting litigation from states and \u201care actively exploring opportunities for the Democratic Caucus to file amici curiae that support their lawsuits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mere three weeks into the new Trump Administration and it is clear Trump\u2019s promise of a \u2018golden age\u2019 for America seems to merely be glitter,\u201d Schumer added. \u201cNow more than ever, it is incumbent upon all of us to continue to work overtime to push back, to fight for American families, and to deliver real results to lower costs, protect communities and ensure accountable government.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senate Democrats are detailing how they plan to fight back against President Donald Trump\u2019s administration \u2014 but it won\u2019t include sparking a government shutdown.
