Donald Trump\u2019s federal funding freeze is on ice<\/u><\/a> after an eleventh-hour court order delayed implementation until Feb. 3 \u2014 but not before it became crystal clear Republicans don’t appear to have any red lines when it comes to the president.<\/p>\n

First, congressional GOP leaders didn’t condemn Trump\u2019s threats to circumvent the Senate\u2019s advise-and-consent role on his nominees. Then, Republican lawmakers caved to the president’s push to delay the ban on TikTok \u2014 undermining legislation they passed last year.<\/p>\n

There was also the party’s about face over Jan. 6, when Republicans who publicly criticized Trump after the Capitol attacks shrugged off his pardons of the riot\u2019s most violent participants.<\/p>\n

Now, as Trump wages an all-out assault on Congress\u2019 power of the purse, Republicans are largely letting him<\/u><\/a> get away with it \u2014 and are even making excuses on his behalf as the White House scrambles to adjust its messaging amid widespread backlash.<\/p>\n

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s unusual\u201d for a president to pause federal aid for review, while Speaker Mike Johnson declared it was \u201can appropriate decision\u201d<\/u><\/a> for a new administration and argued the effects would be \u201charmless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 House Republican, outright applauded Trump<\/u><\/a> in Doral for \u201cdoing exactly what he was elected to do.\u201d And GOP Conference Chair Lisa McClain of Michigan hailed the move as a \u201cbrilliant\u201d idea.<\/p>\n

Even some centrists offered what was, at best, muted criticism. Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins of Maine said the Trump administration should be more \u201cselective\u201d in what aid is being paused, but that there was \u201cbenefit in taking a look at federal spending to see where we can be more efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n
