President-elect Donald Trump slammed Jimmy Carter\u2019s agreement to transfer ownership of the Panama Canal to Panama as a \u201cdisgrace\u201d \u2014 on the first day the late former president is set to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n

\u201cJimmy Carter gave it to them for $1 and they were supposed to treat us well. I thought it was a terrible thing to do,\u201d Trump said Tuesday at a news conference at Mar-a-Lago.<\/p>\n

Carter died last month at 100 years old. On Tuesday, his casket was transferred to Washington, D.C., where he will lie in state at the Capitol before his funeral on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Democrat signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaties in 1977 during his one term in office, setting in motion the 1999 transfer of the U.S.-built infrastructural wonder to the country of Panama. No part of those agreements included a $1 sale.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody wants to talk about the Panama Canal now, it\u2019s inappropriate I guess, because it\u2019s a bad part of the Carter legacy,\u201d Trump said later in the press conference. He added that Carter was \u201ca good man\u201d and \u201ca very fine person,\u201d but that \u201cgiving the Panama Canal to Panama was a very big mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I believe that\u2019s why Jimmy Carter lost the election in my opinion, moreso maybe than the hostages,\u201d Trump said, referring to American diplomats in Iran who were held hostage for over a year.<\/p>\n

Trump has been threatening to take back the Panama Canal<\/a> \u2014 a link between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans essential for global trade \u2014 and railed against the Panamanian president<\/a>, Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino, who has maintained that the canal will remain under his country\u2019s control.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey laugh at us because they think we\u2019re stupid,\u201d Trump said Tuesday of Panama. \u201cBut we\u2019re not stupid anymore, so the Panama Canal is under discussion with them right now. They\u2019ve violated every aspect of the agreement and they morally violated it also.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked by a reporter if he could \u201cassure the world\u201d he would not use \u201cmilitary or economic coercion\u201d in his efforts to bring the canal and Greenland under U.S. control, Trump said \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n
