President-elect Donald Trump said Monday that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his pick to lead HHS<\/a>, wouldn\u2019t be \u201cradical\u201d in his health policies \u2014 a concern for many Senate Republicans who will decide his confirmation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s going to be much less radical than you would think,\u201d Trump said during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago. \u201cHe\u2019s going to have an open mind, or I wouldn\u2019t have put him there.\u201d<\/p>\n

But in the same press conference, Trump suggested he was open to Kennedy\u2019s more radical ideas, and dodged a question about whether he believes vaccines cause autism, a claim research has repeatedly debunked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking to find out,\u201d he said, later suggesting pesticides, also a target of Kennedy, could be leading to rising autism diagnoses. \u201cSomething bad\u2019s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump wouldn\u2019t back long-standing vaccines for children going to school, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t like mandates,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But on the polio vaccine? \u201cI\u2019m a big believer in it,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to lose the polio vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why it matters:<\/b> Trump\u2019s comments come as Kennedy is set to meet with Senate Republicans this week<\/a> about his nomination. Some lawmakers have signaled concern about Kennedy\u2019s views, especially his vaccine skepticism and misinformation.<\/p>\n

Trump previously softened Kennedy\u2019s position that the regulatory agencies need significant reforms, saying his nominee wouldn\u2019t upset the current system and would work with the pharmaceutical industry.<\/p>\n

As an example, Trump said Monday that in an earlier meeting with Kennedy, CMS nominee Mehmet Oz<\/a> and pharmaceutical executives spent more time on drug costs than anything else.<\/p>\n

On that front, the president-elect said he would target pharmaceutical \u201cmiddlemen,\u201d the shorthand policymakers have used recently in their push to further regulate pharmacy benefit managers. PBMs negotiate drug prices for insurers and employers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to knock out the middleman,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI don\u2019t know who these middlemen are, but they are rich as hell.\u201d<\/p>\n
