Sen. Lisa Murkowski said Thursday she felt \u201cmore comfortable\u201d with no party label than with \u201can identity as a Republican,\u201d an escalation of the Alaska senator\u2019s occasional bucking of her party as the chamber readies itself for a slew of confirmation battles over Trump administration nominees.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m not attached to a label, I’d rather be that \u2018no label.\u2019 I’d rather be that person that is just known for trying to do right by the state and the people that I serve, regardless of party, and I’m totally good and comfortable with that,\u201d Murkowski said during a discussion hosted by the centrist group No Labels at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.<\/p>\n

Later on during the discussion, Murkowski clarified that she is \u201cstill a Republican\u201d and has \u201cnever shed my party label.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a system in the Senate where there are two sides of the aisle, and I have to sit on one side or I have to sit on the other,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Murkowski, who has served as a Republican senator from Alaska since 2003, has occasionally defied her party<\/a> and criticized its members\u2019 willingness to kowtow to President-elect Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think I’ve made any secret of the fact that I’m more of a Ronald Reagan Republican than I am a Trump Republican,\u201d she said Thursday. \u201cAnd someone said, \u2018Well, you aren\u2019t really a Republican at all.\u2019 And I said, \u2018You can call me whatever you want to call me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Murkowski is seen as one of Democrats\u2019 top hopes to block Trump\u2019s most contentious Cabinet picks, alongside fellow centrist Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine).<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Murkowski predicted \u201cit’s going to be hard in these next four years\u201d because the Trump administration\u2019s \u201capproach is going to be: Everybody tow the line. Everybody line up. We got you here, and if you want to survive, you better be good. Don’t get on Santa’s naughty list here, because we will primary you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed specifically to Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), whose swing vote could sink Pete Hegseth\u2019s bid<\/a> to run the Pentagon.<\/p>\n

Despite being \u201cone of the more conservative, principled Republican leaders in the Senate right now,\u201d Murkowski said, Republicans are slamming Ernst \u201cfor not being good enough\u201d \u2014 and she said she is worried the Iowa senator could be primaried.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
