Robert Garcia. \u201cThe days of us not fighting back are over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following his party\u2019s decisive midterm wins, the California Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/11\/05\/congress\/garcia-for-oversight-01151838\" target=\"_blank\">formally announced<\/a> his bid to chair the Oversight Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/robertgarcia.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/robertgarcia.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2026-11-05.garcia-to-cogr-re-chairmanship-signed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">in a letter to colleagues<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The bid comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepRobertGarcia\/status\/2117818643342041235?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">Garcia warned members<\/a> of the Trump administration and others to \u201clawyer up.\u201d On Sunday, he added that even members of the president\u2019s family \u2014 such as President Donald Trump\u2019s son, Donald Trump, Jr., and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner \u2014 could \u201cabsolutely\u201d be subjects of the committee\u2019s investigations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey should be expected to answer questions,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p>He also indicated that pardons Trump made earlier in his second term could be investigated, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/10\/23\/trump-ballroom-donors-list-00620230\" target=\"_blank\">donors helping finance<\/a> the president\u2019s White House ballroom; the operation into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/us-strikes-venezuela-captures-maduro-trump-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicol\u00e1s Maduro<\/a>; the Iran war; and Trump allies including Elon Musk and the president\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/11\/06\/how-katie-miller-helped-make-her-husband-become-chief-of-staff-01154997\" target=\"_blank\">newly appointed chief of staff<\/a> Stephen Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Todd Blanche on Sunday accused Garcia and other Democratic leaders of \u201coutright threats\u201d and condemned the promised probes of \u201cbasically every member of the Cabinet,\u201d including Miller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have members of Congress who, after Tuesday, have done nothing but threaten everything that&#8217;s happening in this administration. That is not governing, that is not leading, that is not oversight,\u201d Blanche said in an interview immediately preceding Garcia\u2019s. &#8220;That&#8217;s actually a disappointment. And it&#8217;s sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blanche on Sunday appeared to indicate the Justice Department could investigate Democratic members at the behest of Trump, who has called Democratic leaders extortionists and, on multiple occasions, called for them to be jailed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Todd Blanche is doing right now is a threat,&#8221; said Garcia. &#8220;He is threatening our committee.
