The top Democrats on the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees want President Donald Trump to preserve his conversations with artificial intelligence chatbots as part of an inquiry into whether Elon Musk’s AI assistant played a role in shaping White House policy \u2014 a preview of what\u2019s to come if their party flips the chamber next week.<\/p>\n

In a letter to Trump obtained by Blue Light News<\/u><\/a>, Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Robert Garcia of California are demanding that the president preserve \u201cany prompts\u201d submitted to AI chatbots, including Musk’s Grok, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude while \u201ccarrying out your constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties,\u201d along with the AI responses.<\/p>\n

Raskin and Garcia \u2014 who are expected to wield the Judiciary and Oversight gavels if Democrats win back the House, respectively \u2014 are also asking for a briefing on the matter by 5:00 p.m. on Nov. 11.<\/p>\n

Their request was informed by reporting<\/u><\/a> that said Trump sought Grok\u2019s \u201cadvice on carrying out some of your presidential duties, including asking Grok to opine on how Venezuelans would respond to the capture of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.\u201d The lawmakers note that, just \u201cweeks later,\u201d Trump \u201cordered the U.S. military, without congressional authorization, to attack Venezuela and capture President Maduro.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garcia and Raskin called the example \u201cdeeply troubling\u201d because Trump \u201cconsulted Grok \u2014 but not Congress \u2014 on your military deployment to Venezuela, circumventing Congress\u2019s constitutional power to declare war and introducing instead into American foreign policy decision making a technology that is highly manipulable and demonstrably error-prone.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also said the use of AI chatbots by the White House \u201cexposes the United States to acute national security risks\u201d and that usage \u201cexposes the country to malign influence from unknown and unaccountable third parties.\u201d<\/p>\n

A White House official said in a statement that “the White House preserves all required records in accordance with the law.”<\/p>\n
