Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.). \u201cThis deal is a gift to our adversary and a betrayal of our Allies; it should be rescinded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, a smaller group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/11\/senators-demand-trump-kill-russia-diesel-deal-01116050\" target=\"_blank\">senators called on the president<\/a> to \u201cimmediately reverse course\u201d on the plan in a statement. Retiring Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) \u2014 who signed on to both \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/11\/tillis-trump-russian-diesel-deal-01115978\" target=\"_blank\">said Sunday there may be<\/a> \u201ca legitimate case for saying the president\u2019s not following the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Trump announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/09\/trump-diesel-sanctions-lifted-russia-01114977\" target=\"_blank\">in a social media post<\/a> on Friday that Russia would \u201cimmediately supply\u201d diesel fuel to global markets \u2014 including potentially the U.S. \u2014 to help relieve high prices driven, in part, by the ongoing war with Iran. Though Trump has repeatedly defended the U.S.\u2019s actions against Iran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/10\/trump-zelenskyy-russia-ukraine-01115841\" target=\"_blank\">on Saturday he demanded<\/a> an end to Ukrainian drone strikes that have crippled Russian oil refineries that he argues have caused the record-high oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>The senators on Tuesday argued that the deal with Russia will have a \u201cnegligible impact\u201d on fuel prices while providing Putin with \u201cmore fuel to finance his war machine\u201d as Russia continues its \u201cbrutal attacks on Ukrainian civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deal with Russia is a sharp pivot from a sweeping sanctions package <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/16\/house-russia-sanctions-bill-trump-01081210\" target=\"_blank\">signed into law last month<\/a>. That legislation \u2014 championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) \u2014 was meant to deplete Moscow\u2019s resources by targeting Russian officials, banks and a shadow fleet of oil tankers. It drew widespread bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Senators on Tuesday referenced the package as they condemned Putin as a \u201ctyrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor decades, America has stood as the bastion of freedom against tyranny, and American presidents have embodied our nation\u2019s resistance to tyrants. Putin is a tyrant,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cWithdraw from this agreement, rescind General License No. 135, and execute the authorities provided under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. Maintain our legacy \u2013 and the duty America holds \u2013 as leader of the free world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Blumenthal and Tillis, Tuesday\u2019s letter was signed by Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), Dick Durbin (Ill.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), Jack Reed (R.I.), and Chris Coons (Del.) and Republican Sens.
