{"id":27422,"date":"2026-10-06T12:04:42","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T12:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-thune-and-trump-plot-gop-money-wave\/"},"modified":"2026-10-06T12:04:42","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T12:04:42","slug":"capitol-agenda-thune-and-trump-plot-gop-money-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-thune-and-trump-plot-gop-money-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitol agenda: Thune and Trump plot GOP money wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>John Thune has money on his mind in the final stretch before the midterms.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate majority leader, in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/06\/john-thune-interview-midterms-01108222\" target=\"_blank\">exclusive conversation<\/a> Monday with Blue Light News on the campaign trail, said funding for Republicans has dominated his recent conversations with President Donald Trump and his staff as the party tries to divvy up its spending to hold onto seats in closer-than-expected races while picking up spots in other states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the president is sincerely interested in trying to do whatever he can to help the team,\u201d Thune said. \u201cYou know, some of the states have gotten very expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thune\u2019s focus highlights the emerging story defining the 2026 midterms: Is there enough Republican money, and can it be spent fast enough to counter surging Democratic campaigns and a lackluster national environment for the GOP?<\/p>\n<p>Thune was at a news conference Monday with Senate GOP candidate Michele Tafoya in Minnesota \u2014 a state where the party increasingly sees a pickup opportunity after Democrats nominated progressive Peggy Flanagan.<\/p>\n<p>Minnesota is one possible state where Trump could deploy his $400 million war chest, Thune said. But he was vague when asked about Republicans\u2019 potential commitment to the race. He named Michigan and New Hampshire as other GOP pickup opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are simultaneously having to play defense in a growing list of red states, like Iowa, Kansas and Alaska. And the Thune-aligned Senate Leadership Fund recently pulled back spending in North Carolina \u2014 essentially surrendering a GOP-held seat to Democrats \u2014 while increasing its spending in Kansas.<\/p>\n<p>Thune referred to the super PAC\u2019s North Carolina decision as a \u201cpause\u201d in financial support.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s Texas, where Republicans are deploying hundreds of millions of dollars as they struggle to drag GOP nominee Ken Paxton over the finish line. Thune said \u201cdedicated donors\u201d focused on Texas have prevented the need to siphon funding away from other states.<\/p>\n<p>Thune declined Monday to put odds on the GOP\u2019s chances of keeping Senate control, but repeated, \u201cI think we can keep the majority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The results may carry personal stakes for him, as he is expected to run for leader again. And while no other senator has raised their hand against him, some conservatives have questioned whether Trump would publicly turn on Thune if Republicans lose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t control that,\u201d Thune said, adding that the Republican conference would ultimately make the decision. \u201cWhat the president does or doesn\u2019t do \u2026 you just move forward and let the chips fall where they may.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 THUNE CHECKS TRUMP\u2019S DAYLIGHT SAVING ZEAL \u2014\u00a0<\/b>Thune also said Monday there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/10\/05\/congress\/john-thune-daylight-saving-clocks-01107875\" target=\"_blank\"><u>no \u201cconsensus\u201d yet<\/u><\/a> on Congress establishing permanent daylight saving time \u2014 even as Trump ramps up pressure to pass it. \u201cThe president feels strongly on it like he does a lot of issues,\u201d Thune said. \u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019re having conversations about, but there\u2019s no clear path forward or consensus on it yet.\u201d Thune also made clear that while Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/03\/trump-tom-cotton-cell-phone-daylight-savings-01105998\" target=\"_blank\"><u>singled out<\/u><\/a> Sen. Tom Cotton for scrutiny, opposition to the bill \u2014 which would lead to late winter sunrises in some parts of the country \u2014 runs deeper than one senator.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 BUCKS FOR BABIES PLAN DRAWS MURRAY<\/b> <b>IRE \u2014<\/b> Top Democratic appropriator Patty Murray<b>\u00a0<\/b>is blasting a Trump administration plan to reward communities with high birth and marriage rates with a <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2026\/10\/babies-marriage-transit-funding-trump-01107399\" target=\"_blank\">bigger share of federal transit money<\/a>. \u201cTying funding for transit projects to marriage rates and how many babies a woman has is the sort of bizarre and dystopian idea you\u2019d expect in a TV show, not actual policy put forth by the U.S. government \u2014 yet here we are,\u201d Murray said in a statement. The Federal Transit Administration wants to revamp a multibillion-dollar program that helps state and local authorities fund infrastructure projects such as rail improvements and new bus lanes.
