I think we just need to do our best,\u201d Rep. G.T. Thompson, a Pennsylvania Republican, told reporters Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He was responding to Altman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/04\/sam-altman-decoded-interview-ai-01106217\" target=\"_blank\"><u>comments to Decoded by Blue Light News<\/u><\/a> that people \u201cshould accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pressed further on whether he agreed with Altman\u2019s premise, Thompson replied, \u201cNo, I think we have to work harder to prevent any bad things from happening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Altman\u2019s comments come in the wake of increased panic over the risks of catastrophic destruction from AI, with many industry leaders and experts arguing that guardrails are needed on the technology to prevent it from spinning out of human control.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure is building on Congress to regulate the rapidly-advancing technology, but lawmakers are divided over whether the AI industry needs federal regulation or if it\u2019s capable of governing itself.<\/p>\n<p>The executives of major AI labs and tech companies gathered at the White House last week to discuss solutions with President Donald Trump, who believes overregulating AI will have national security repercussions. The group ended up signing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/29\/ai-execs-morally-binding-constitution-01097855\" target=\"_blank\"><u>a \u201cmorally binding\u201d AI accord<\/u><\/a> that critics say won\u2019t do enough to prevent a worst-case scenario.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson noted Monday he believes that AI will bring \u201ctremendous solutions,\u201d specifically in regards to finding cures for health issues like cancer and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. But he also said AI has to be led with \u201cprinciple\u201d \u2014 comparing it to how he addressed digital assets in a bill to regulate the cryptocurrency industry, which he worked on as chair of the Agriculture Committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first principle is \u2018do no harm.\u2019 So we need to protect consumers, and that means, I think, building some guardrails \u2014 some guidelines \u2014 to do that,\u201d Thompson said.
