{"id":27417,"date":"2026-10-05T22:35:09","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T22:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/john-thune-says-no-clear-path-forward-for-clock-change-bill\/"},"modified":"2026-10-05T22:35:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T22:35:09","slug":"john-thune-says-no-clear-path-forward-for-clock-change-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/john-thune-says-no-clear-path-forward-for-clock-change-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"John Thune says &#8216;no clear path forward&#8217; for clock-change bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>LE SUEUR, Minnesota \u2014 Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> said Monday there is no \u201cconsensus\u201d yet on advancing a bill establishing permanent daylight saving time even as President Donald Trump ramps up pressure on Republicans to pass it.<\/p>\n<p>Thune addressed the matter in a Monday interview after Trump used his Truth Social account multiple times over the weekend to rail against the legislation, known as the Sunshine Protection Act \u2014 going so far as to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/10\/03\/trump-tom-cotton-cell-phone-daylight-savings-01105998\" target=\"_blank\">post the personal cell phone number<\/a> of one of its GOP opponents, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/198766\" data-person-id=\"198766\">Tom Cotton<\/a> of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president feels strongly on it like he does a lot of issues,\u201d he said. &#8220;It\u2019s something we\u2019re having conversations about but there\u2019s no clear path forward or consensus on it yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While Trump singled out Cotton for scrutiny, Thune made clear the opposition to the permanent daylight saving time proposal \u2014 which would lead to very late winter sunrises in some parts of the country \u2014 ran deeper than one senator.<\/p>\n<p>Cotton has publicly voiced opposition to the proposal for year, citing, among other things, the fact that children in his state would be going to school in the dark for part of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51675\" data-person-id=\"51675\">Roger Wicker<\/a> (R-Miss.) voiced similar objections Monday to reporters in the Capitol, saying he was mindful of &#8220;safety concerns in the more northern and rural states where children get on the school bus in very early hours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thune, who spoke during a campaign swing in Minnesota with GOP Senate nominee Michele Tafoya, has himself opposed previous daylight saving bills. He said Monday that \u201ca lot of it depends on where you are in the country&#8221; and that &#8220;your geography probably has as much to do with your position on that as anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/175586\" data-person-id=\"175586\">Rick Scott<\/a> (R-Fla.), who has aligned himself closely with Trump, is among the lawmakers who have been pushing to get the bill through the Senate.
