{"id":27333,"date":"2026-09-29T19:04:50","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T19:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/cruz-blocks-senate-democrats-bid-to-pass-ai-safety-bill\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T19:04:50","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T19:04:50","slug":"cruz-blocks-senate-democrats-bid-to-pass-ai-safety-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/cruz-blocks-senate-democrats-bid-to-pass-ai-safety-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Cruz blocks Senate Democrats\u2019 bid to pass AI safety bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A Democratic trio attempted to pass an artificial intelligence bill via a unanimous consent request on Tuesday but were blocked on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/66837\" data-person-id=\"66837\">Mark Warner<\/a> (D-Va.), <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/201768\" data-person-id=\"201768\">Brian Schatz<\/a> (D-Hawaii) and <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/25648\" data-person-id=\"25648\">Andy Kim<\/a> (D-N.J.) sought to pass their Artificial Intelligence Risk Management and Security Act using the procedural mechanism, which allows expedited consideration of legislation but fails if one senator opposes it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole world has recognized that we\u2019ve got to do something,\u201d Warner said in a speech on the floor. \u201cWe should not miss the moment to put a safety protocol in place now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/175665\" data-person-id=\"175665\">Ted Cruz<\/a> (R-Texas) objected to the bill, preventing any chance of passage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress must not legislate on the issue of artificial intelligence hastily or in a closed manner,\u201d he said on the floor, adding that it gave some in the government too much power to dictate the technology that could be permitted to be released.<\/p>\n<p>As some lawmakers grow concerned over dire warnings from AI labs\u2019 top executives about the technology\u2019s risk to humanity, Congress\u2019 attempts to legislate AI guardrails have largely stalled.<\/p>\n<p>In the past few weeks, two other AI-related bills, the <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_S_5028?q=Ratepayer+Protection+Act\" target=\"_blank\">Ratepayer Protection Act<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/09\/16\/congress\/paul-kills-kill-switch-bill-01081348\" target=\"_blank\">AI Emergency Button Act<\/a>, were also nixed in an attempt to pass them unanimously.<\/p>\n<p>Warner, Schatz and Kim\u2019s new bill would have established a new safety board within the Commerce Department to vet models before they are deployed and set safety standards for the industry.
