Lawmakers could include these guardrails as part of the annual defense policy bill set for negotiations this fall.<\/p>\n<p>But despite Huang\u2019s team having had some success over the past year in convincing lawmakers to peel back regulations that would hamper exports, the swift shift in the AI political landscape has led the company to start sounding out of touch \u2014 at least to some lawmakers\u2019 ears.<\/p>\n<p>One Senate Democratic aide, granted anonymity to describe private meetings, said Huang\u2019s recent visits to congressional offices have \u201crepeatedly been seen as tone deaf, as he\u2019s openly dismissed or downplayed the risks of AI, including denying any likely workforce disruptions from the technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJensen makes an argument \u2014 I\u2019m not sure I fully buy it \u2014 that as long as the world is relying on Nvidia chips, that\u2019s a good thing,\u201d the Senate Intelligence panel\u2019s top Democrat, Mark Warner, said in an interview. He\u2019s among those who fear giving a top U.S. competitor more tools to advance AI technology, which other industry executives have recently warned could have catastrophic consequences for humanity if left unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>Huang last week echoed President Donald Trump\u2019s sentiment that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/15\/nvidia-jensen-huang-ai-safety-01078081\" target=\"_blank\"><u>no new AI laws or regulations<\/u><\/a> are necessary. But even Trump this weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/19\/trump-ai-force-01085279\" target=\"_blank\"><u>seemed to concede<\/u><\/a> there are some dangers to the emerging technology. In a Truth Social post, he announced an \u201cAI Force\u201d and an AI czar to lead it \u2014 though he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/19\/tech-industry-scratches-head-over-ai-force-01085319\" target=\"_blank\"><u>offered few details<\/u><\/a> about what powers it would have or whether its creation would need congressional approval.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a trio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/21\/senate-republicans-ai-safety-01085069\" target=\"_blank\"><u>of GOP senators is trying to convince<\/u><\/a> their leaders to do something \u2014 anything \u2014 on AI safety, an issue they believe could tilt the midterms and 2028 elections.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. John Curtis, Josh Hawley and John Kennedy aren\u2019t coordinating their efforts, but each is making a push from the back benches to jolt more senior senators to take action, with Curtis and Hawley teaming up with Democrats on various efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis said in an interview lawmakers need to \u201cshow that we\u2019re adults in the room, that we can talk about this, that we can find solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawley is also convening a hearing this week in the Judiciary subcommittee he chairs on AI-powered Flock cameras, and using another subcommittee gavel to investigate OpenAI over the runaway model that led to rogue AI agents escaping testing.<\/p>\n<p>But any hopes of passing legislation are facing skepticism among Senate Republicans that they will ever be able to overcome Trump\u2019s opposition to AI regulations and House GOP leaders who side with the administration, according to three people granted anonymity to describe private conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy said in an interview he hadn\u2019t heard \u201canything\u201d about movement in the Senate to address AI and that lawmakers who ignore the growing voter uproar around the issue were courting peril.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really need to send a memo around explaining we\u2019ve got midterm elections coming,\u201d he said. \u201cI may send that out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2026\/09\/20\/anthropic-white-house-ai-01085212\" target=\"_blank\">deep dive in POLITICO&#8217;s magazine<\/a> digs into the Trump administration\u2019s complicated relationship with Anthropic and how officials\u2019 perspective has shifted on AI this year as they discover the fearsome computing power being assembled by private companies on their watch.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 DEMS EYE ONE MORE IRAN VOTE \u2014<\/b> Senate Democrats are hoping to rebuke Trump and the Iran war in one last war powers vote this week before the midterms.
