{"id":27081,"date":"2026-09-11T00:34:41","date_gmt":"2026-09-11T00:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/how-republicans-are-privately-talking-about-their-senate-map-at-the-convention\/"},"modified":"2026-09-11T00:34:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-11T00:34:41","slug":"how-republicans-are-privately-talking-about-their-senate-map-at-the-convention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/how-republicans-are-privately-talking-about-their-senate-map-at-the-convention\/","title":{"rendered":"How Republicans are privately talking about their Senate map at the convention"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>DALLAS \u2014 Top Republicans are scrambling to shore up their Senate map in Alaska, Texas and other red states \u2014 and are privately acknowledging they could very well lose in Georgia and North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>As GOP lawmakers, candidates and party officials gather for their midterm convention in Dallas, their conversations reveal how the party is thinking about their chances in the battle for the upper chamber, less than two months from Election Day.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"story-text__heading-medium\"><b>THE TOP TARGETS<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n <br \/>\n Senate Majority Leader John Thune ticked through a handful of battleground states he\u2019s confident about in a closed-door lunch on Thursday \u2014 he\u2019s particularly focused on Alaska, Maine and Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was hosted by the Senate Leadership Fund, the Senate\u2019s top GOP super PAC, and was used to rally Republican donors, according to two people in the room who were granted anonymity to share details of the private discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are bullish about their chances of holding their seat in Maine after the Democratic side devolved into chaos over the summer, when Graham Plater suspended his campaign following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/06\/graham-platner-sexual-assault-allegation-00987737\" target=\"_blank\">an allegation of sexual assault<\/a>, which he denies. Now, a largely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/20\/troy-jackson-cruised-to-victory-in-maine-but-graham-platner-still-looms-large-with-voters-01004705\" target=\"_blank\">untested, progressive Troy Jackson<\/a> is looking to unseat five-term GOP Sen. Susan Collins.<\/p>\n<p>In Alaska, Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan is locked in a tight race with Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola, but they are optimistic about his prospects in the state that President Donald Trump won by double digits in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan is another opportunity: Republicans have been leaning into attacks warning of the takeover of socialism this cycle. They are spending heavily to boost Republican Mike Rogers, who is running against progressive Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee who\u2019s backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and who has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/09\/trump-elsayed-gop-boogeyman-01029265\" target=\"_blank\">boogeyman for Republicans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"story-text__heading-medium\"><b>TEXAS IS FOR TRUMP\u00a0<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n <br \/>\n Senior Republicans also indicated they would continue to leave shoring up imperiled Ken Paxton in Texas largely to Trump, given that he helped unseat Sen. John Cornyn by backing Paxton in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said in his convention speech Wednesday night that he would help boost Paxton. His affiliated super PAC, MAGA Inc. has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/05\/trump-maga-midterms-republicans-01066625\" target=\"_blank\">already started spending in Texas<\/a> to shore up the Republican. Senate Leadership Fund, which publicly backed Cornyn during the GOP primary, has not announced any spending in Texas.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"story-text__heading-medium\"><b>THE PROBLEM CHILDREN<\/b><\/span><br \/>\n <br \/>\n Georgia, where Republican Rep. Mike Collins is facing rising Democratic star Sen. Jon Ossoff, didn\u2019t come up in the SLF meeting with Thune, according to the people. One of the people who was in the room later told Blue Light News that North Carolina would be \u201ctough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have been increasingly worried about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/17\/republicans-worried-jon-ossoff-georgia-senate-00964687\" target=\"_blank\">Collins falling behind in Georgia<\/a> and Michael Whatley, a former RNC chair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/12\/north-carolina-senate-cooper-whatley-00993535\" target=\"_blank\">in North Carolina<\/a>. Public polling shows both candidates trailing their Democratic opponents. They are also both being outraised on the candidate level, but Republicans have a substantial overall fundraising advantage \u2014 buoyed in large part by Trump\u2019s MAGA Inc. super PAC.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rick Scott, a former NRSC chair, said in an interview at the convention this week that if the Georgia GOP gubernatorial nominee Rick Jackson \u201cruns an unbelievable race in Georgia, he gives Mike Collins an opportunity possibly to beat Ossoff.\u201d He also painted North Carolina as \u201cprobably one of the hardest ones,\u201d given that Whatley is facing popular former Gov. Roy Cooper for an open seat.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats need to hold onto all of their seats \u2014 including defending the open seat in Michigan \u2014 while also flipping four GOP-held ones to gain control of the upper chamber.
