OpenAI\u2019s models spent more than four days loose online and hacked into Hugging Face\u2019s networks.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI is now facing calls from both sides of the aisle to provide more details on the incident, which marked the first documented fully autonomous cyberattack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch evidence of autonomous collusion and subversion of human oversight is alarming enough, but greater still is the evidence that OpenAI knew that the AI agents were exhibiting rogue behavior and let the evaluations continue anyway,\u201d Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/151824\" data-person-id=\"151824\">Richard Blumenthal<\/a> (D-Conn.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blumenthal.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/20260909_-_openai_-_cot_and_rogue_agentspdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sent a similar letter<\/a> to Altman on Wednesday demanding to see the independent audits of the incident and details on the development of the company\u2019s latest model, Astra. Independent auditing groups METR and Redwood Research conducted the investigations, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/09\/03\/technology\/openai-hugging-face-hack.html\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI has reportedly limited them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Hugging Face incident fueled concerns among lawmakers in both parties about the risks posed by advanced AI models. OpenAI launched its latest model Astra last week, despite lingering safety concerns.<\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen states have also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/privacy-and-data-security\/montana-joins-alabama-others-launching-openai-security-probe\" target=\"_blank\">opened investigations<\/a> into the incident. California, which is home to OpenAI, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/04\/california-investigation-openai-hugging-face-hack-01065800\" target=\"_blank\">the latest state<\/a> to open a probe into the company.<\/p>\n<p>Hawley has given Altman and OpenAI until Oct. 1 to fulfill his request.
