It was highly concerning,\u201d Cruz said in the interview.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIt reminded me, last year I had Elon Musk on my podcast \u2026 and one of the questions I asked him, I said, \u2018OK, what are the odds that AI destroys humanity?\u2019 And he looked at me and said, \u201810-20%,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018holy crap.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, Cruz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/25\/ted-cruz-ai-regulations-trump-00975491\" target=\"_blank\">holds significant influence<\/a> over the fate of AI legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz worked with Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51842\" data-person-id=\"51842\">Amy Klobuchar<\/a> (D-Minn.) last year to pass the bipartisan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/19\/trump-signs-take-it-down-act-criminalizing-deepfake-and-revenge-porn-00357151\" target=\"_blank\">Take it Down Act<\/a>, which criminalized nonconsensual intimate imagery, including deepfakes and revenge porn created by AI. Cruz called for more legislation on Wednesday to guard against the \u201ccatastrophic risks\u201d of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Those risks, which he said include biological and nuclear threats, should require government supervision and approval before they can be implemented. Cruz said he is currently working with Klobuchar and Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> (R-S.D.) to begin to address those dangers through bipartisan legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is scary stuff, but we\u2019re also not going to be able to stick our head in the sand and pretend technology isn\u2019t happening. So we\u2019ve got to put some guardrails on it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cruz said the likelihood of such legislation becoming law was \u201cnot clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmy and John are negotiating right now. It is possible to move bipartisan legislation \u2026 but it ain\u2019t easy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his concerns about the risks of AI, he said the U.S. needs to lead the world in the technology\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the real challenges is [that] China is going full speed ahead, and whatever we do here, China is not going to stop,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cIf there are going to be killer robots, I would rather they be American killer robots, rather than Chinese killer robots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a social media post highlighting his remarks on the show, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenTedCruz\/status\/2097727324011536877?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">Cruz added<\/a>: \u201cIf China leads the world in AI, the whole world is in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
