Lori Trahan raised alarm bells over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/03\/mark-zuckerberg-said-a-national-ai-regulator-was-a-flawed-idea-in-a-secret-call-with-president-trump-01063843\" target=\"_blank\">a POLITICO report<\/a> detailing attempts by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to personally discourage President Donald Trump from moving ahead with plans to establish an independent AI regulator modeled after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, or FINRA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t think anyone is really comfortable when they see tech executives who are sitting on the stage at the president&#8217;s inauguration, and have had to pay millions of dollars to this fund and that fund, calling the shots,\u201d said the Massachusetts Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing Zuckerberg to call the shots on the proposed AI commission would be tantamount to \u201ca complete abdication of Congress,\u201d Trahan continued. She also suggested would use her perch on the House Energy and Commerce Committee to work with other Democrats to haul in industry executives like Zuckerberg to testify, should Democrats win back the House majority in the midterms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress&#8217; job is to do oversight and to have those hearings,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I think we would learn a lot from those hearings so that we can put pen to paper on thoughtful proposals. So yes, there have been a number of people, myself included, who have called for those hearings, and I think we&#8217;re going to continue to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trahan is poised to be a major player in the coming weeks and months when it comes to AI, especially if Democrats prevail in the November elections and are forced to solidify a position on the subject; the party is currently all over the map.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other Democrats who have retreated to their corners to work on partisan proposals, Trahan has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/26\/ai-framework-democrats-congress-00935307\" target=\"_blank\">gone out on a limb<\/a> by crossing the aisle to broker a deal on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/23\/obernolte-trahan-artificial-intelligence-bill-introduced-in-house-01009497\" target=\"_blank\">a bipartisan AI safety bill<\/a> with Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-Calif.) \u2014 a package that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/05\/house-ai-deal-00951217\" target=\"_blank\">originally met with disdain<\/a> by members of both parties.<\/p>\n<p>She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/09\/03\/congress\/house-democrats-vice-chair-jacobs-underwood-01063864\" target=\"_blank\">announced this week<\/a> she would opt out of a run for a place in House Democratic leadership after being widely expected to make a play in the next Congress \u2014 in part, she said, to continue working on AI issues.<\/p>\n<p>But Trahan&#8217;s comments Friday illustrate the deep distrust among Democrats, herself included, over the GOP approach to AI regulation \u2014 from Republicans waffling on whether they support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/09\/02\/republicans-data-center-response-midterms-01060606\" target=\"_blank\">proliferation of data centers<\/a> to Trump\u2019s recent call with Zuckerberg.<\/p>\n<p>Her calls are consistent with left-leaning members like Rep. Greg Casar, a Texas Democrat and chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who has been at the forefront of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/13\/greg-casar-ai-progressives-midterms-00994107\" target=\"_blank\">aggressive proposals<\/a> to crack down on top tech companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CEOs of Anthropic and OpenAI say that cutting edge AI could be as dangerous as nuclear weapons,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepCasar\/status\/2095615912485236995\" target=\"_blank\">Casar said Thursday on X<\/a> in response to the Blue Light News report. \u201cBut Trump is conspiring with billionaires for this technology to be regulated like &#8230; Hollywood movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trahan said Friday that \u201creasonable people can disagree on what regulatory construct we come up with\u201d governing development and use of AI.<\/p>\n<p>But, she added, \u201cwhat I don&#8217;t think the American people agree with is that Mark Zuckerberg and President Trump are going to figure that out on a phone call.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A House Democrat trying to lead her party on artificial intelligence policy sent a warning shot Friday to tech CEOs trying to undermine efforts to regulate the fast-growing technology.
