Suhas Subramanyam says federal authorities monitored phone conversations he had with a state senator as part of a corruption investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Subramanyam, who previously served as a state lawmaker in Virginia, said in a statement Thursday that the FBI and Department of Justice informed him that they monitored conversations he had with state Senator L. Louise Lucas as part of their investigation of her.<\/p>\n<p>The first-term member of Congress noted what he called the \u201cextremely suspicious\u201d timing of the wiretap between March and May, when Virginia Democrats were at the peak of campaigning for a referendum to enable mid-decade redistricting in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis should concern anyone who believes in a real Department of Justice that serves the American people and not a singular president,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the FBI raided the office of Lucas and a retail cannabis business she co-owns as part of the investigation. No charges have been filed and the scope of any investigation remains unknown.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Subramanyam\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Virginia Democrat Rep.
