But prospects are waning with each passing hour, as lawmakers face a slew of other priorities, including plotting the path for a stopgap funding patch.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday it\u2019s possible members stay through the weekend or return next week to knock out lingering tasks, delaying the start of a five-week recess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks to me at least like there\u2019s a good possibility that it\u2019ll take us more than Thursday or Friday to get through the things we have to get through,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Budget Republicans are meeting separately Tuesday morning to talk about advancing a framework in the Senate, but Chair Ron Johnson declined to say Monday whether he would release a budget resolution this week \u2014 a necessary step for the chamber to make any movement forward.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said he\u2019s \u201cworking with leadership,\u201d who he acknowledges has been prioritizing government funding. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sen. John Kennedy told reporters Monday he didn\u2019t expect any budget resolutions on the floor this week because \u201cI don\u2019t think my leadership wants to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I\u2019ve said before, you got to have the votes to get on it,\u201d Thune said Monday, while stopping short of nixing the possibility of a vote this week.<\/p>\n<p>Thune also may need to deal with GOP hard-liners demanding votes on the SAVE America Act as frustration percolates over whether the budget measure\u2019s election provisions comply with Senate rules for the reconciliation process.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Roger Marshall joined Sen. Mike Lee Monday in saying the chamber shouldn\u2019t depart without passing the elections bill, and Marshall said he\u2019d be willing to object to adjourning the chamber over it.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 BLANCHE HAS MORE REPUBLICANS TO CONVINCE: <\/b>Todd Blanche\u2019s prospects for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/todd-blanche-senate-nomination-grappling-01023443\" target=\"_blank\"><u>confirmation as attorney general<\/u><\/a> were much improved Monday \u2014 but he\u2019s not in the clear yet. The acting attorney general secured votes from the previously reluctant Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis over the weekend, all but certainly giving him the votes he needs to advance out of Judiciary Tuesday morning. But he still needs to get through the full Senate, where he can only lose two Republican votes given likely unified opposition from Senate Democrats and Sen. Mitch McConnell\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 GOP SENATORS BREAK SILENCE ON MILLER: <\/b>Multiple Senate Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/max-miller-senate-gop-quit-01023309\" target=\"_blank\">are calling for<\/a> Rep. Max Miller to step down from office amid domestic abuse allegations. The outcry comes after Sen. Bernie Moreno \u2014 father of Miller\u2019s ex-wife, Emily Moreno \u2014 said in a statement Sunday Miller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/02\/ohio-rep-max-miller-stay-in-race-01021642\" target=\"_blank\">should not serve in the House<\/a>. Miller has denied the allegations. The surge of support from Moreno\u2019s colleagues marks the first significant crack in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/08\/01\/max-miller-abuse-divorce-gop-01021028\" target=\"_blank\">a wall of GOP silence<\/a> regarding the claims.
