Mitch McConnell should resign if he can\u2019t \u201cdirectly and verbally address the people of Kentucky\u201d with \u201cproof of your capacity to serve,\u201d escalating pressure on the former Republican Senate leader as he continues to recover from a fall that left him hospitalized well over a month ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring that time you have cast zero votes, engaged in no official activities, and aside from two photos and corresponding statements, have made no effort to communicate with your Kentucky constituents or the nation,\u201d Beshear wrote Monday in a letter addressed to McConnell, 84, and his staff.<\/p>\n<p>The seven-term senator, who will retire in January, said in a July 12 statement to constituents he plans to return to the Senate. He also shared that he has dealt with a \u201cmild case of pneumonia\u201d while in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell has \u201cmaintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcconnell.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/pressreleases?ID=DC6BF158-0E6A-4BAC-AF63-43E7DB393869\" target=\"_blank\">his physician shared<\/a> in a press release Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In early July, Beshear also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/07\/08\/congress\/mitch-mcconnell-health-beshear-letter-00989981\" target=\"_blank\">asked the senator to<\/a> \u201cfully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health,\u201d writing that the state\u2019s residents had grown \u201cincreasingly concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, he raised the stakes, urging Senate Majority Leader John Thune to investigate McConnell\u2019s condition if &#8220;you are unwilling to voluntarily show that you still have the capacity to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kentucky Democratic Gov.
