Blake Miguez \u2014 whom President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2026\/02\/04\/trump-miguez\/\" target=\"_blank\">backed in February<\/a> to run in Louisiana\u2019s 5th District, which is being vacated by Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/396825\" data-person-id=\"396825\">Julia Letlow<\/a> \u2014 was making moves to run in the newly redrawn 6th District, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are seeking to flip the 6th District after the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/29\/voting-rights-act-supreme-court-future-00898949\" target=\"_blank\">striking down major parts of the Voting Rights Act<\/a> allowed the state Legislature to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/29\/louisiana-republicans-pass-gerrymander-landry-00942820\" target=\"_blank\">lock in a new 5-to-1 GOP majority map<\/a>. In May, state lawmakers erased Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/127669\" data-person-id=\"127669\">Cleo Fields<\/a>\u2019 (D-La.) sprawling, majority-Black and majority-Democratic district in favor of a safely Republican one.<\/p>\n<p>Miguez is facing allegations of sexually assaulting a woman in 2007. Miguez has denied the claims of sexual assault, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/2026\/03\/lousiana-blake-miguez-trump-endorsement\/686325\/\" target=\"_blank\">resurfaced in March media reports<\/a> and blindsided many Trump officials, according to three other people with knowledge of the conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Jon George, the White House Southeast regional political director, said in the calls this week that Trump officials told Miguez in a recent meeting he would not immediately have the president\u2019s endorsement to enter the race for the 6th District. White House officials would continue to assess the race.<\/p>\n<p>George said Trump\u2019s endorsement of Miguez in the 5th District would not be rescinded. He said on the calls that Miguez then indicated he would still push ahead to run in the 6th District. <\/p>\n<p>His campaign website is now locked and password protected.<\/p>\n<p>The people with knowledge of the calls and the president\u2019s political operations were granted anonymity to discuss private conversations. When reached for comment, a White House official \u2014 similarly granted anonymity \u2014 reiterated Trump has not pulled his backing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;President Trump has not rescinded his endorsement of Blake Miguez. He will look at the candidate field after candidate filing if necessary, but at this point he has not made any changes nor does [he] have an intent to,&#8221; the official said. &#8220;If new information changes things, [we] will cross that bridge when we get to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Miguez did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Louisiana&#8217;s redistricting transformed Fields\u2019 district from one then-Vice President Kamala Harris carried by about 15 points in 2024 to one Trump would have won by over 30 points, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-downballot.com\/p\/the-downballots-calculations-of-presidential\" target=\"_blank\">calculations from The Downballot<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Fields announced earlier this week he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/07\/21\/congress\/rep-cleo-fields-heads-out-01006782\" target=\"_blank\">will not seek reelection<\/a>, instead running for the state Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Trump endorsed Miguez in February to run in the 5th District, after he ended his Senate bid to help clear the field for Letlow, who was Trump\u2019s pick to primary GOP Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/66858\" data-person-id=\"66858\">Bill Cassidy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 5th District was deep red before the Legislature redrew the lines earlier this year, and remains safe Republican territory even as the boundaries shifted a bit. A slew of GOP candidates are already in the race to replace Letlow, including state Rep. Michael Echols, the majority leader of the Louisiana House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<p>State. Sen. Rick Edmonds, Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">Mike Johnson<\/a>\u2019s former pastor, and several other Republicans are either already in or taking steps to run in the 6th District.
