{"id":25885,"date":"2026-07-15T14:32:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/todd-blanche-confirmation-hearing-kicks-off\/"},"modified":"2026-07-15T14:32:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T14:32:19","slug":"todd-blanche-confirmation-hearing-kicks-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/todd-blanche-confirmation-hearing-kicks-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Todd Blanche confirmation hearing kicks off"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Attorney general nominee Todd Blanche opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/14\/todd-blanche-confirmation-hearing-attorney-general-00998340\" target=\"_blank\"><u>his confirmation hearing<\/u><\/a> by telling members of the Senate Judiciary Committee he is committed to \u201crestoring American trust\u201d in the the Justice Department \u2014 after claiming the Biden administration weaponized the law against President Donald Trump and many Republican lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent years, we watched the Justice Department turn against many of you and a former president and it damaged the public&#8217;s faith in justice,\u201d Blanche, the current deputy attorney general now also leading the DOJ in an acting capacity, said Wednesday morning. \u201cWe are fixing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was likely referencing Biden-era special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s investigation into Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and mismanagement of classified documents.<\/p>\n<p>Blanche, who was confirmed last year as deputy attorney general, told the Senate he is \u201chere today to earn your trust once more\u201d amid indications that Judiciary Committee Republicans Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas could oppose him.<\/p>\n<p>He also used his opening statement to play up the accomplishments his agency has taken to keep Americans safer, specifically noting actions to more stringently enforce the borders, keep drugs out of the country and crack down on fraud such as in the healthcare space.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, went after Blanche for an uneven rollout of the Jeffrey Epstein files and his role in facilitating the controversial legal settlement agreement for Trump that led to the short-lived launch of an \u201canti-weaponization fund\u201d that members of both parties decried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis nation deserves an Attorney General who loves the Constitution more than he loves the President.
