So far we expect the budget resolution to include $67 billion for defense spending, $11 billion in farm aid and pieces of the SAVE America Act.<\/p>\n<p>But House GOP leaders and senior White House officials have a raft of other issues to resolve to get party factions on board. Vice President JD Vance Wednesday will meet with House Republicans at 3 p.m. at the Capitol and is all but certain to press members to find a path forward:<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 THE FISCAL HAWKS:<\/b> Fiscal hawks are frustrated the bill\u2019s plan doesn\u2019t include immediate and bold cuts to offset new spending.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Josh Brecheen, one fiscal hawk on the Budget panel, said he is \u201csympathetic\u201d to the defense portion not having pay-fors \u2014 but declined to give his support for the $11 billion in farm aid that doesn\u2019t not include offsets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve got to get the votes in Budget Committee for that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 THE MODS:\u00a0<\/b>Moderate Republicans, meanwhile, are more likely to support the package without any pay-fors, especially after facing political blowback for the spending cuts in last summer\u2019s reconciliation package.<\/p>\n<p>If cuts are \u201coff the table, then we\u2019re in a much better place,\u201d Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick said.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 OTHER REQUESTS:<\/b> Some Republicans are frustrated the package doesn\u2019t go far enough in tackling issues like affordability and health care \u2014 which have become key issues in midterm elections. Others are criticizing it falls well short of the $350 billion military infusion President Donald Trump called for.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Republicans believe the White House has declined to provide more specifics about the $67 billion defense portion because it will include Iran war funding that may stir opposition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to see: are they funding something that I don\u2019t back, right?\u201d Fitzpatrick added: \u201cI support the military. I\u2019m against the war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opposing the war \u201cdoesn\u2019t mean we take it out on the troops,\u201d Fitzpatrick added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rep. Don Bacon \u2014 while generally supportive of the supplemental funding for the military \u2014 said he is still demanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/06\/30\/congress\/gop-rebels-threaten-iran-spending-bill-over-poland-troop-fight-00981709\" target=\"_blank\">American troops return to Poland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he wants my vote, he\u2019s got to answer,\u201d on Poland, Bacon said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 DEMS SHIFT STRATEGY TO CURB IRAN WAR:\u00a0<\/b>Democrats are turning their focus away from forcing votes on war powers resolutions and toward other levers of power to rein in the war in Iran. A prime target: the annual must-pass $1.15 trillion defense policy bill. The bill is tentatively scheduled for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/07\/14\/congress\/house-republicans-80-billion-reconciliation-00997839\" target=\"_blank\"><u>House floor vote<\/u><\/a> next week, while Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader <b>Chuck Schumer<\/b> unanimously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/14\/senate-dems-block-defense-bill-protest-iran-war-00997134\" target=\"_blank\"><u>sunk that chamber\u2019s<\/u><\/a> version Tuesday. In Democrats\u2019 view, a vote against the National Defense Authorization Act amounts to a vote against authorizing the war, said a Senate Democratic aide granted anonymity to discuss private conversations.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 DEMS SHIFT STRATEGY TO CURB IRAN WAR:\u00a0<\/b>The fate of the Senate majority could lie in the hands of 600 yet-to-be-chosen Maine Democrats next week, and Schumer \u2014 an inveterate campaign meddler \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/15\/chuck-schumer-maine-senate-platner-00998418\" target=\"_blank\"><u>is staying on the sidelines<\/u><\/a>. Schumer told Blue Light News he is not endorsing a candidate in the primary.
