{"id":25817,"date":"2026-07-14T16:17:18","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T16:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/jim-jordan-explores-immigration-deal-with-hard-liners-amid-floor-impasse\/"},"modified":"2026-07-14T16:17:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T16:17:18","slug":"jim-jordan-explores-immigration-deal-with-hard-liners-amid-floor-impasse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/jim-jordan-explores-immigration-deal-with-hard-liners-amid-floor-impasse\/","title":{"rendered":"Jim Jordan explores immigration deal with hard-liners amid floor impasse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>House Judiciary Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51745\" data-person-id=\"51745\">Jim Jordan<\/a> said Tuesday he is negotiating with a key GOP holdout in hopes of drafting an immigration bill that can help unlock the ongoing floor impasse.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan (R-Ohio) said he is speaking with Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/3265\" data-person-id=\"3265\">Chip Roy<\/a> (R-Texas), who is leading a block of hard-line conservatives who are upset GOP leaders have not yet called up a vote on a tough immigration and border crackdown.<\/p>\n<p>The talks, Jordan said, have included potentially using a bill cracking down on so-called sanctuary cities that has already advanced out of the Judiciary Committee as a base, then adding elements of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/2\" target=\"_blank\">much broader bill<\/a>Roy is pushing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think that&#8217;s just good policy and would be helpful, so we&#8217;re looking at that,&#8221; Jordan said.<\/p>\n<p>The House is set to vote on a procedural measure Tuesday afternoon that would effectively reopen the floor after weeks of GOP infighting.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not clear whether the Jordan solution would placate Roy, who said as recently as Monday that he was not yet satisfied with how party leaders were responding to his demands.<\/p>\n<p>Those leaders have struggled to find a solution that would both appease hard-liners like Roy and more moderate Republicans who are wary of a border crackdown and want provisions such as an expanded agricultural guestworker program added.<\/p>\n<p>House Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/59655\" data-person-id=\"59655\">Steve Scalise<\/a> said Tuesday that Republicans are &#8220;not in agreement on the next approach&#8221; to the immigration issue but will keep talking among themselves about a way forward.<\/p>\n<p>Those talks continue as Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">Mike Johnson<\/a> appears to have satisfied a separate group of GOP holdouts who had pushed leaders to do more to pressure the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act.<\/p>\n<p>The leader of that bloc, Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/364729\" data-person-id=\"364729\">Anna Paulina Luna<\/a> of Florida, indicated Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/07\/13\/congress\/luna-stands-down-00995824\" target=\"_blank\">she would stand down<\/a> so long as House GOP leaders move to attach the controversial elections bill to every major bill headed to the Senate this year.
