Mitch McConnell to provide an update on his health amid a secretive weekslong hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p>Beshear <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.ky.gov\/attachments\/20260708_McConnell-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><u>sent a letter to McConnell<\/u><\/a> Wednesday, saying that Kentuckians had grown \u201cincreasingly concerned\u201d since the former Senate Republican leader was hospitalized in mid-June about both his health and \u201cability to hold office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs governor, I request that you fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health,\u201d Beshear wrote to McConnell. \u201cAs public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent. I believe this requires clear communication about one&#8217;s ability to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for McConnell did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Beshear\u2019s letter or whether the senator had spoken with the governor or plans to speak with him.<\/p>\n<p>Beshear said during a news conference last week that he had received \u201cno updates\u201d regarding McConnell\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell was first hospitalized on June 14. While his staff has provided multiple updates since, they have not disclosed why he was hospitalized or details on his condition. Online speculation that he could be in grave condition erupted online recently after news outlets reported on D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services radio traffic indicating a person at McConnell\u2019s address was found unconscious and required <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/01\/politics\/mcconnell-ems-call-unconscious-cpr\" target=\"_blank\"><u>cardiac resuscitation<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Three Republicans \u2014 Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Majority Whip John Barrasso and McConnell-adviser-turned-commentator Scott Jennings \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/07\/07\/congress\/mitch-mcconnell-health-thune-barrasso-00988874\" target=\"_blank\"><u>said Tuesday<\/u><\/a> they had spoken to McConnell this week.<\/p>\n<p>Beshear, a Democrat who was elected in 2019, cited the online chatter in requesting transparency, arguing that \u201callowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians.\u201d He said his own office has been peppered with questions about McConnell\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, Kentucky Republicans have moved to sideline Beshear from the appointment process should there be a Senate vacancy. The state legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/28\/kentucky-replace-mcconnell-beshear-00149543\" target=\"_blank\"><u>changed the succession law<\/u><\/a> in 2024, shortly after McConnell announced that he would retire at the end of his current term.<\/p>\n<p>Where previously the governor could make an appointment to fill a Senate vacancy pending a special election, as in most states, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kentucky-legislature-senate-vacancies-faf6f1f41fa42c3e0b818fc3fb3d4d4a\" target=\"_blank\"><u>new law<\/u><\/a> provides only for a special election.
