They are aching to ensure whomever may take Platner\u2019s place on the ballot is better vetted after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/06\/graham-platner-sexual-assault-allegation-00987737\" target=\"_blank\">POLITICO\u2019s exclusive reporting<\/a> on allegations of sexual assault against him, which Platner denies.<\/p>\n<p>Still, even the appearance of the Senate minority leader controlling voters\u2019 choice is stoking fears of deflated turnout and internal fighting that could risk the chance to unseat GOP Sen. Susan Collins and snatch the chamber\u2019s majority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opposite of maximally participatory is any version of events where Chuck Schumer and out-of-step party leaders in D.C. are calling the shots for Maine Democratic Party leaders,\u201d Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder Adam Green said in an interview. Green\u2019s group had backed Platner before pulling their support Monday and pushing for another progressive pick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can\u2019t happen as a party insider backroom deal,\u201d Sen. Chris Murphy <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrisMurphyCT\/status\/2074621512318124530\" target=\"_blank\">posted on X<\/a>. \u201cVoters are sick of the status quo and they need to have a say here &#8211; or our party will squander whatever credibility we have left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be clear: Platner has not dropped out of the race, despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/07\/platner-senate-democrats-drop-out-tracker-00988633\" target=\"_blank\">vast majority<\/a> of Democratic senators Schumer leads calling for him to step aside. He has until July 13 to make a decision, and the Maine Democratic Party would need to name his replacement by July 27.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, that group Tuesday night accused Platner\u2019s team itself of attempting to \u201cput their thumb on the scale of what this process looks like,\u201d according to a press release. The organization tried to assure voters it was committed to an \u201copen, inclusive, transparent, and fair,\u201d path forward.<\/p>\n<p>Platner\u2019s campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/07\/graham-platner-maine-democratic-party-discussion-00989701\" target=\"_blank\">responded to the claim by saying it had reached<\/a> out to the state party to discuss the possible process of replacing him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Graham wouldn\u2019t want to be a part of the process, he would want to make sure the voters and volunteers make this decision \u2014 not the political establishment,\u201d a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren French, a spokesperson for the Senate Majority PAC, a group aligned with Schumer, said \u201cthis should be a Maine-centric decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But as high as the stakes are for the party, the stakes are similarly high for Schumer, whose leadership has been challenged across the Democratic Senate map, including in Maine as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/30\/chuck-schumer-janet-mills-meltdown-2026-00902217\" target=\"_blank\">his handpicked candidate<\/a> Gov. Janet Mills struggled mightily before suspending her campaign in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Schumer] knows it\u2019s important in their calculus to win the Senate so I don\u2019t see him turning a blind eye to this,\u201d said one veteran Democratic strategist, granted anonymity to speak candidly. \u201cBut yes if people think he\u2019s tipping the scales or something there\u2019s going to be more fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>In another sign of the toxicity of showing establishment ties at this moment, one potential Maine candidate expressed doubt about supporting Schumer as leader if elected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s a question to be determined,\u201d Nirav Shah, who said he is \u201cevaluating\u201d jumping in the race, told Alec Hernandez in an interview. \u201cI\u2019ve got concerns, as do many, with his leadership, but that\u2019s not a question I want to go to right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/07\/maine-voters-graham-platner-biden-harris-fears-00989673\" target=\"_blank\">Maine Democratic voters are wary about repeating mistakes of 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 <i>MCCONNELL&#8217;S ABSENCE COMPLICATES PENTAGON BUDGET BOOST PLANS: <\/i><\/b>Sen.
