It recast it."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>France\u2019s national soccer team has become an unlikely barometer for the country\u2019s leading far-right party, whose leaders&#8217; shifting rhetoric about the team reflects its broader attempts at moderation \u2014 from appeals around racial identity to working-class solidarity \u2014 and helps explain why the National Rally is now seen as having a genuine shot at the presidency after decades of falling short.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Marie Le Pen, the founder of the party known during his lifetime as the National Front, became perhaps the most vocal domestic antagonist of France\u2019s soccer team as it emerged as an international force in the 1990s. After the country assembled a formidable squad led by nonwhite players with heritage from across its former colonial holdings,<a href=\"https:\/\/africasacountry.com\/2013\/03\/the-blood-of-the-impure\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Le Pen disowned them<\/u><\/a> as \u201cfake Frenchmen who don\u2019t sing the Marseillaise or visibly don\u2019t know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit artificial to bring in foreign players and baptize them \u2018Equipe de France,\u2019&#8221; Le Pen said in 1996, words he repeated even after the team<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1998-jul-25-mn-7069-story.html\" target=\"_blank\"><u>won the World Cup two years later<\/u><\/a>. \u201cThey put an Algerian in to please the Arabs, a Kanak who can\u2019t even sing the national anthem, blacks to satisfy the Antillais. None of them has any place in a French team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Marine Le Pen prepared to succeed her father as leader of the party, she echoed his critique of the team as an example of France\u2019s new migrants refusing to assimilate,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/opinion\/article\/2026\/06\/01\/mutual-mistrust-persists-between-football-and-the-french-far-right_6754011_23.html?srsltid=AfmBOop61FvUcPyqt7yV1hrirq_EEq-mBgTa6FfYkbNOIoX49LVaXwGA\" target=\"_blank\"><u>calling the 2010 World Cup squad<\/u><\/a> a collection of &#8220;ethnic, religious clans that are creating a sort of apartheid within the team itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of these people consider themselves as representatives of France one minute, when they\u2019re at the World Cup,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marianne.net\/societe\/comment-le-debat-sur-lequipe-de-france-de-football-sest-racialise-depuis-1998\" target=\"_blank\"><u>she said in a television interview<\/u><\/a> at the time. \u201cBut the next, they feel like they belong to another country or have another nationality in their hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As France\u2019s governing parties weakened over the 2010s, Le Pen saw an opportunity to win support from traditional center-right constituencies. She insisted her party was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LkYi9x8tHW0\" target=\"_blank\"><u>not racist<\/u><\/a>,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/marine-le-pen-to-snub-dads-exclusion-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>ejected her father<\/u><\/a> after he repeated statements denying the Holocaust, and rebranded the movement under a friendlier National Rally banner (abbreviated as RN in French).<\/p>\n<p>Even if she was not ready to be a fan of the French national team \u2014 Le Pen conceded she &#8220;knows absolutely nothing about football\u201d and expressed a preference for rugby \u2014 she was ready to abandon her father\u2019s loud tradition of naysaying its successes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard for the RN and far-right wing to be as blatantly critical of <i>Les Bleus<\/i> when the team has represented the nation well over the last decade in both their on- and off-pitch endeavors,\u201d said Lindsay Sarah Krasnoff, a sports diplomacy expert who teaches at New York University\u2019s Robert Preston Tisch Institute for Global Sport and is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/basketball-empire-9781350384170\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>author of two books<\/u><\/a> on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/making-of-les-bleus-9780739175088\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>sports in France<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When France won a World Cup for the second time, in 2018, Le Pen made her target not the champions themselves but politicians who latched on to the team\u2019s successes. Emmanuel Macron, the centrist who had defeated her for the presidency a year earlier \u201cshould focus on the policies being implemented in France, about which there is much to say, and let <i>Les Bleus<\/i> go all the way to victory,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europe1.fr\/politique\/coupe-du-monde-2018-pour-marine-le-pen-la-victoire-des-bleus-ne-fera-pas-disparaitre-les-inquietudes-des-francais-3707414\" target=\"_blank\"><u>she told an interviewer<\/u><\/a>. Sporting success, added Le Pen, \u201cwon&#8217;t make worries disappear, it won&#8217;t make the dangers of insecurity and terrorism disappear, it won&#8217;t make the financial struggles disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was part of a broader redirection of far-right resentments away from race and ethnicity to class and status, embodied by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/why-are-france-yellow-jackets-so-angry-fuel-tax-emmanuel-macron\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>yellow-vest protests that began months<\/u><\/a> after that World Cup victory. Le Pen began to speak of France\u2019s most famous athletes the way her father once dismissed Paris\u2019 detached elites \u2014 \u201ctechnocratic robots, graduates of the \u00c9cole Nationale d&#8217;Administration, and bourgeois bohemians,\u201d he said in a 2006 address to a party convention \u2014 rather than as ungrateful immigrants representing the country\u2019s restive suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>The populist shift was evident in 2004, when several of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/france-national-rally-kylian-mbappe-jordan-bardella-marine-le-pen\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>team\u2019s top strikers all joined a swift counterattack<\/u><\/a> against the National Rally following its gains in regional elections. French captain Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 called the outcome \u201ccatastrophic\u201d and cautioned that \u201cthe extremes are knocking at the doors of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have the luck to have a huge salary, be a multimillionaire, the chance to travel in a private jet, I am a little annoyed to see these sports figures giving lessons to people who struggle to make ends meet,\u201d Jordan Bardella, a Le Pen prot\u00e9g\u00e9 then leading the National Rally,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/politics\/article\/2024\/06\/18\/french-elections-far-right-leader-bardella-asks-voters-for-absolute-majority-slams-mbappe_6675094_5.html\" target=\"_blank\"><u>responded to Mbapp\u00e9<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now Bardella and Le Pen are waiting to see who will be the party\u2019s candidate in next year\u2019s presidential elections, a choice likely to be shaped by a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/frances-far-right-just-cant-shake-off-its-fraud-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>looming court decision this week about Le Pen\u2019s eligibility<\/u><\/a> to run due to an embezzlement conviction.
