Sen. Thom Tillis on Sunday expressed frustration with President Donald Trump\u2019s continued fixation on passing the SAVE America Act.<\/p>\n

In an interview with BLN\u2019s \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d the retiring North Carolina Republican lamented \u201cthe impossible task\u201d of implementing the requirements of the legislation ahead of November\u2019s crucial midterms.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are we doing more things to undermine our confidence in elections, rather than getting the strong message out that will win for Republicans this year?\u201d Tillis said.<\/p>\n

Rather than promoting the bill \u2014 which would require voters to present a photo ID at the ballot box and effectively end widespread mail-in voting \u2014 Tillis said Republicans should tell voters about \u201cthe rise of the Democratic Socialists of America\u201d while accepting the current voting laws.<\/p>\n

\u201cWin by the good results that Republicans have produced and stop undermining the confidence in the elections,\u201d said Tillis. \u201cThis is a bedrock of our 250-year history of success as the democracy that changed the world. Let’s not mess with that between now and November.”<\/p>\n

Trump has said the SAVE America Act is his \u201cNo. 1 priority<\/a>\u201d ahead of midterms, going so far as to abruptly cancel a bill signing<\/a> for major bipartisan legislation on housing affordability until Congress passes his elections bill. But many Democrats are staunchly against the bill, arguing it could disenfranchise millions of voters, and Republican leaders in Congress have repeatedly indicated it does not have the votes to pass.<\/p>\n

Tillis co-sponsored the original SAVE America Act<\/a> but has objected to Trump\u2019s version of the legislation, which would also bar transgender athletes from women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time Tillis has clashed with Trump.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Tillis blocked Trump\u2019s Fed chair nominee<\/a>, Kevin Warsh, until the Justice Department dropped an investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. He has also spoken out against<\/a> the Justice Department\u2019s $1.776 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund,\u201d calling it a \u201cpayout for punks.\u201d And he has emerged as a fierce critic<\/a> of Bill Pulte, Trump\u2019s interim director of national intelligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet’s try and figure out a way to completely and finally end these distractions so that we can focus on the damage Democrats could do if they take the House, if they beat incumbent Republicans in the Senate.
