Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who resigned from Congress Wednesday after President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to nominate him to lead the Department of Justice. It was Gaetz who initiated and led the historic efforts to oust McCarthy from the speakership last year, dragging into the open bitter feelings that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/05\/08\/mccarthy-gaetz-gop-florida-00156659\" target=\"_blank\"><u>have not softened<\/u><\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2024\/07\/16\/rnc-live-updates-coverage\/some-mccarthy-gaetz-drama-00168856\" target=\"_blank\"><u>the months since<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the choices are very good, except one. Gaetz won&#8217;t get confirmed, everybody knows that,\u201d McCarthy told Bloomberg\u2019s Haslinda Amin on \u201cThe Asia Trade&#8221; on Thursday morning, referring to Trump\u2019s Cabinet and administration nominations.<\/p>\n<p>When Amin pressed him on why Trump chose Gaetz, McCarthy said \u201cit&#8217;s a good deflection from others\u201d but stopped himself from going into detail. \u201cYou&#8217;d have to ask the president, but Gaetz couldn&#8217;t win in a Republican conference, so it doesn&#8217;t matter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Even amid a bevy of controversial picks to join Trump\u2019s Cabinet, Gaetz\u2019s selection to be attorney general has sparked particular concern at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/11\/13\/trump-gaetz-attorney-general-justice-department-00189496\" target=\"_blank\"><u>the agency he\u2019s been named to lead<\/u><\/a>. The Florida Republican was also the subject of a House Ethics Committee probe into multiple allegations, including that he had sex with a minor, which he has denied. GOP colleagues of Gaetz suggested that his immediate resignation from Congress may have been an effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/11\/13\/matt-gaetz-resigns-congress-00189488\" target=\"_blank\"><u>head off the official release of the Ethics Committee\u2019s report<\/u><\/a>, which they expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>But besides Gaetz, McCarthy praised Trump\u2019s other picks, especially Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of State. The former speaker said the president-elect had learned from his previous experience in the White House and will \u201chit the ground running\u201d this time.<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy also praised Trump for tapping Elon Musk to help lead a new department to spearhead efforts to shrink the federal government, calling Musk a \u201cThomas Edison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElon was texting me this morning.
