{"id":24486,"date":"2026-06-18T19:47:53","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T19:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/white-house-scheduled-to-meet-with-groups-on-ai-and-kids-safety-bills\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T19:47:53","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T19:47:53","slug":"white-house-scheduled-to-meet-with-groups-on-ai-and-kids-safety-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/white-house-scheduled-to-meet-with-groups-on-ai-and-kids-safety-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"White House scheduled to meet with groups on AI and kids\u2019 safety bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The White House scheduled a meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss legislation regarding kids\u2019 online safety and preemption of state artificial intelligence laws, according to two people granted anonymity to share details of the private briefing and an invitation obtained by Blue Light News.<\/p>\n<p>The invitation \u2014 sent Wednesday by Hailey Borden, the deputy director of the White House\u2019s Office of Public Liaison \u2014 said the meeting would be \u201can off the record discussion on kids safety and preemption.\u201d The two people said groups advocating for online safety were invited to attend and that the discussion would focus on a package of AI regulations that\u2019s being assembled by Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51279\" data-person-id=\"51279\">Marsha Blackburn<\/a> (R-Tenn.).<\/p>\n<p>It followed several meetings last week that top White House officials convened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/11\/white-houses-ai-state-preemption-kids-safety-00958020?nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b4be0000&amp;nname=inside-congress&amp;nrid=ce2e35b1-c9a5-40e5-aab9-414bdc1741b8\" target=\"_blank\">with tech companies<\/a> and childrens\u2019 safety groups to discuss the legislative push.<\/p>\n<p>The latest invitation did not name which groups were invited. The White House and Blackburn\u2019s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting comes as lawmakers and White House officials continue to iron out details of the legislative package, which is expected to include versions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_S_4591\" target=\"_blank\">NO FAKES Act<\/a> \u2014 which would create new regulations against AI deepfakes and other AI-generated replicas and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/06\/18\/congress\/anti-deep-fake-bill-advances-to-senate-floor-00967021\" target=\"_blank\">advanced out of the Senate Judiciary Committee<\/a> on Thursday \u2014 as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_7757?q=kids+online+safety+act\" target=\"_blank\">Kids Online Safety Act<\/a>, or KOSA, which aims to hold companies to stricter design standards that would prioritize child safety. The <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_S_1586?q=App+Store+Accountability+Act\" target=\"_blank\">App Store Accountability Act<\/a>, or AASA, which requires minors to obtain parental verification before downloading apps, is also expected to be included.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal could have new life now that Meta, which helped kill KOSA two years ago after a fierce lobbying fight, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/06\/16\/congress\/meta-opposition-kosa-00964605\" target=\"_blank\">dropped its opposition<\/a> to the specific bill now that it\u2019s expected to be linked to a limited preemption of state AI laws and AASA, which would put the onus on app store platforms like Google and Apple to verify users\u2019 ages.<\/p>\n<p>But Blackburn\u2019s forthcoming package is expected to face opposition in the Senate, where she\u2019ll be tasked with winning over leadership and key voices on AI like Commerce Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/congress\/member\/9c10f49c-c99d-46b3-854b-28db18856420\" target=\"_blank\">Ted Cruz<\/a> (R-Texas).<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the talks on Thursday afternoon, Cruz told reporters only: \u201cWe\u2019re all working collectively.\u201d Blackburn echoed the sentiment that discussions are ongoing, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have more to say about that sometime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The efforts to attach kids\u2019 online safety measures to Blackburn\u2019s broader AI package has also sparked backlash from conservative groups including former Vice President Mike Pence\u2019s Advancing American Freedom and the Taxpayers Protection Alliance.
