{"id":24041,"date":"2026-06-11T18:02:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T18:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/rick-scott-lifts-holds-on-coast-guard-promotions\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T18:02:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T18:02:25","slug":"rick-scott-lifts-holds-on-coast-guard-promotions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/rick-scott-lifts-holds-on-coast-guard-promotions\/","title":{"rendered":"Rick Scott lifts holds on Coast Guard promotions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/175586\" data-person-id=\"175586\">Rick Scott<\/a> said Thursday he had lifted his hold on Coast Guard promotions as he works to resolve a dispute between the service branch and a shipbuilder in his state.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida Republican said in a statement that he cares \u201cdeeply about these Coast Guard promotions\u201d and that \u201cthough we\u2019re still not done, I\u2019m lifting these holds as all parties have been working together in good faith and are moving towards an amenable agreement that gets ships built and is fair to US taxpayers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott added that \u201cthe process still needs to be better\u201d and that he would \u201cfight to ensure there is more oversight and accountability of the Coast Guard and that we fix the Coast Guard procurement process going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scott initially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/04\/21\/congress\/rick-scott-coast-guard-holds-00884854\" target=\"_blank\">placed the hold<\/a> in April on the elevation of officers within the service, preventing the Senate from approving promotions via unanimous consent.<\/p>\n<p>Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/07\/11\/secretary-noem-protects-american-taxpayers-against-wasteful-contracts-while\" target=\"_blank\">scrapped plans<\/a> for two advanced cutters being manufactured at Panama City-based Eastern Shipbuilding Group. The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2025\/11\/18\/eastern-shipbuilding-halts-work-on-coast-guard-cutter-program-cites-financial-strain-and-program-conditions\" target=\"_blank\">shipyard announced<\/a> in November it would stop work on the two remaining boats \u201cdue to significant financial strain caused by the program\u2019s structure and conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott had been a longtime booster of the partnership between Eastern and the Coast Guard and said in April he had been working with the administration to resolve the dispute but was struggling to get traction.<\/p>\n<p>While the Senate could have held roll-call votes to sidestep Scott\u2019s blockage, service officer promotions are usually noncontroversial and leaders rarely choose to expend valuable and finite floor time to advance them if there is not unanimous consent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
