{"id":23511,"date":"2026-06-02T12:02:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T12:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-trump-officials-try-to-calm-slush-fund-fury\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T12:02:05","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T12:02:05","slug":"capitol-agenda-trump-officials-try-to-calm-slush-fund-fury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-trump-officials-try-to-calm-slush-fund-fury\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitol agenda: Trump officials try to calm \u2018slush\u2019 fund fury"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has a chance Tuesday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/06\/01\/senate-republicans-weaponization-fund-00946184?cid=apn\" target=\"_blank\">convince Republicans he\u2019s dropping plans<\/a> for a controversial $1.8 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s unclear if members of his party will be swayed enough to unjam President Donald Trump\u2019s larger agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Republicans \u2014 enough of whom returned from recess still furious about the pot of money \u2014 will discuss the status of the fund during a closed-door lunch Tuesday, according to several Republican senators.<\/p>\n<p>Hours later Blanche is set to testify to House appropriators certain to grill him on his statements last month that the fund could be used to pay people who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>That testimony set off a furor that scuttled planned votes on separate legislation to fund agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement for the remainder of Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Republican senators, including some top leaders, said a Justice Department statement Monday that it would \u201cabide by\u201d a federal judge\u2019s ruling to temporarily halt any payouts of the fund was not enough to calm concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s pretty clear that the president has to say very explicitly that there&#8217;s not going to be a weaponization fund,\u201d Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reconciliation bill looks like a broken arm with the bones sticking out,\u201d said Sen. John Kennedy. \u201cIt won&#8217;t move this week, in my opinion, unless we have some resolution on the weaponization fund.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also testifying Tuesday is Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who is expected to underscore for Senate Appropriations the urgency in passing the larger $70 billion funding package for immigration enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he believed the DOJ statement made it \u201cclear that they\u2019re not proceeding with the fund,\u201d but leaders are \u201cstill sorting through\u201d whether the statement was sufficient to satisfy members.<\/p>\n<p>Several GOP senators didn\u2019t close the door when asked about adding language related to the fund to the current party-line bill or supporting separate legislation. And some Senate Republicans could still vote to add a preemptive ban to the funding bill or support amendments \u2014 along with Democrats who label it a \u201cslush\u201d fund \u2014 that would limit or nix the account, four Republican aides acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>Such a step, if it\u2019s not explicitly backed by Trump, could threaten to sink the overall bill.<\/p>\n<p>Thune said that Republicans should know by Tuesday if they are going to be able to revive the immigration enforcement bill this week.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 JOHNSON CAN&#8217;T STIFLE IRAN WAR POWERS DEFECTORS: <\/b>Speaker Mike Johnson and House GOP leaders are all but certain they can\u2019t stave off handing Trump an embarrassing loss this week on his military campaign in Iran.
