{"id":23090,"date":"2026-05-21T17:32:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T17:32:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/blanche-makes-little-headway-with-gop-critics-of-anti-weaponization-fund\/"},"modified":"2026-05-21T17:32:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T17:32:06","slug":"blanche-makes-little-headway-with-gop-critics-of-anti-weaponization-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/blanche-makes-little-headway-with-gop-critics-of-anti-weaponization-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Blanche makes little headway with GOP critics of \u2018anti-weaponization\u2019 fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche struggled Thursday to quash GOP concerns over a newly announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/18\/trump-irs-lawsuit-settlement-00925801\" target=\"_blank\">$1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Blanche met privately with Senate Republicans as the administration and GOP leaders try to defuse a controversy that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/19\/trump-settlement-fund-jan-6-00928221\" target=\"_blank\">complicating their push<\/a> to quickly advance an immigration enforcement bill.<\/p>\n<p>GOP leaders believe they have enough members who would support a proposal targeting the fund that it would ultimately be added into the filibuster-skirting bill, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/05\/20\/ballroom-security-funding-reconciliation-00930193\" target=\"_blank\">POLITICO first reported<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if the briefing changed her mind, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51168\" data-person-id=\"51168\">Susan Collins<\/a> (R-Maine), a critic of the fund, told reporters, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/66858\" data-person-id=\"66858\">Bill Cassidy<\/a> (R-La.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51218\" data-person-id=\"51218\">Lisa Murkowski<\/a> (R-Alaska) \u2014 who have also been critical of the fund \u2014 declined to comment. But two people granted anonymity to describe the meeting said the meeting did not go well for the administration and that Blanche was not persuasive.<\/p>\n<p>Money for the fund isn&#8217;t included in the GOP\u2019s immigration enforcement bill. But because the bill involves Justice Department funding and the Senate Judiciary Committee is involved in the bill, senators have a path to add language related to the fund into the bill with only 51 votes. Republicans did discuss possible guardrails they could put on the fund during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have not yet finalized the bill they plan to put on the Senate floor, raising the possibility that the chamber could punt action until after a weeklong Memorial Day recess. Senate leaders could have attendance issues if they try to keep members in town past Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if they could still vote on the bill this week, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51287\" data-person-id=\"51287\">John Boozman<\/a> (R-Ark.) told reporters, \u201cThat&#8217;s being discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/151828\" data-person-id=\"151828\">Rand Paul<\/a> (R-Ky) told reporters after leaving the meeting that leaders would likely decide \u201cwithin the next hour or so\u201d about whether to send members home and reconvene after the recess.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> declined to comment on the fund or on the ability to pass a bill this week as he left the meeting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche struggled Thursday to quash GOP concerns over a newly announced $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund.
