Dwight Evans in Pennsylvania\u2019s 3rd District. It\u2019s a major win for the party\u2019s left flank and a significant blow to the city\u2019s storied political machine, which split between two other candidates in the race.<\/p>\n<p>The progressive five-term state lawmaker toppled state Sen. Sharif Street, a former state Democratic Party chair and scion of a prominent North Philadelphia political family who had the backing of much of the city\u2019s establishment. He also defeated Evans\u2019 preferred successor, Ala Stanford, a pediatric surgeon who was running her first political campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The race became a microcosm of the ideological and stylistic fights roiling the party nationally and a proxy battle between its progressive and center-left wings.<\/p>\n<p>In a field where each candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/3rd-congressional-district-democratic-primary-gaza-progressive\/\" target=\"_blank\">claimed progressive bona fides<\/a>, Rabb tacked furthest to the left. He racked up endorsements from members of the \u201cSquad,\u201d won the backing of the local chapters of the Working Families Party and Democratic Socialists of America and held rallies with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/28\/hasan-piker-democrats-midterms-2028-00849453\" target=\"_blank\">polarizing left-wing political streamer Hasan Piker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He pushed his rivals to join him in calling Israel\u2019s war in Gaza a \u201cgenocide\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/philadelphia\/chris-rabb-ala-stanford-aipac-20260407.html?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1775598331\" target=\"_blank\">attempted to tie his competitors<\/a> to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/18\/aipac-israel-illinois-primary-results-00833615\" target=\"_blank\">lightning rod in Democratic primaries<\/a>.
