{"id":22090,"date":"2026-04-30T16:32:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T16:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/house-republicans-eye-passage-of-senate-backed-dhs-funding-bill\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T16:32:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T16:32:17","slug":"house-republicans-eye-passage-of-senate-backed-dhs-funding-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/house-republicans-eye-passage-of-senate-backed-dhs-funding-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"House Republicans eye passage of Senate-backed DHS funding bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>House Republican leaders are working to approve a bill Thursday that would fund all of the Department of Homeland Security except its immigration enforcement agencies \u2014 potentially ending the department&#8217;s 76-day shutdown \u2014 according to a half-dozen people granted anonymity to describe the behind-the-scenes talks.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">Mike Johnson<\/a> is discussing the idea with members of his conference who have wanted to hold off on passage of <a href=\"https:\/\/legislation.politicopro.com\/bill\/US_119_HR_7147\" target=\"_blank\">the bill<\/a> until Republicans enact a separate party-line package to fund agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/27\/senate-dhs-funding-deal-00847949\" target=\"_blank\">Senate passed the partial DHS funding measure<\/a> in March, but for more than a month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/27\/dhs-shutdown-house-gop-mess-00848735\" target=\"_blank\">House GOP leaders have bowed to the holdouts<\/a> and resisted calls to send it to President Donald Trump&#8217;s desk. Now the White House and some House Republican lawmakers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/27\/assassination-attempt-fund-dhs-00893423\" target=\"_blank\">pressuring Johnson<\/a> to clear the bill before lawmakers leave town for a weeklong recess.<\/p>\n<p>House Appropriations Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51327\" data-person-id=\"51327\">Tom Cole<\/a> of Oklahoma and House Republican Conference Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/364726\" data-person-id=\"364726\">Lisa McClain<\/a> of Michigan were among the Republican lawmakers who confirmed that GOP leaders are attempting to send the bill on for Trump\u2019s signature Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson and Cole have both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/04\/27\/congress\/mike-johnson-dhs-funding-00893436\" target=\"_blank\">floated the idea of tweaking<\/a> the bill to omit language explicitly stating that ICE and Border Patrol aren\u2019t funded. But that would require sending it back to the Senate \u2014 not directly to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker is still considering whether to alter the bill or put it on the floor without changes, the people familiar with the talks said.
