Ron Wyden sent a letter to his Democratic colleagues urging them to reject a clean renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act ahead of an expected House vote on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The federal surveillance authority expires Monday, and House GOP leaders<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/15\/republicans-fisa-trump-house-00872766\" target=\"_blank\">delayed a renewal vote set for Wednesday<\/a> after disagreements with some Republicans over including amendments addressing privacy concerns. The White House and Republican leaders are calling for renewal without any changes, but a bipartisan group of lawmakers are demanding guardrails to address concerns <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2026\/04\/the-ai-threat-undercutting-johnsons-fisa-push-00872053\" target=\"_blank\">AI can significantly enhance the government\u2019s mass surveillance capabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith recent developments in AI supercharging how the government can surveil Americans, Congress must use this upcoming debate to make necessary reforms to all our surveillance laws,\u201d Wyden (D-Ore.) said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/f\/?id=0000019d-9219-dc0b-afff-929b96490000\" target=\"_blank\">letter obtained exclusively by POLITICO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The senator sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyden.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/wyden-urges-house-members-to-reject-handing-donald-trump-unchecked-surveillance-authority-insist-on-reforms-to-fisa-section-702\" target=\"_blank\">similar letter to House Democrats<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A final vote in the House could happen around 10 p.m. Wednesday if GOP leadership can strike an agreement with holdouts on changes to the bill. That would set up a possible Senate vote on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Amendments could include requiring a warrant for purchasing Americans\u2019 information from data brokers, and closing a loophole that allows the government to use the foreign surveillance authority to investigate American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>Wyden&#8217;s letter also called for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/09\/us\/politics\/section-702-surveillance-fisa.html\" target=\"_blank\">declassifying a FISA Court opinion<\/a> from last month that he described as finding major compliance problems with Section 702.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
