Tony Gonzales and Eric Swalwell, but Rep. Cory Mills looks to be on solid footing.<\/p>\n<p>Despite months of scrutiny over a range of conduct issues \u2014 including accusations of illicit involvement in federal contracts and stolen valor \u2014 members of both parties say the circumstances are different for the Florida Republican.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans and Democrats <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/15\/house-ethics-cory-mills-expulsion-00872477\" target=\"_blank\">are leaning on bureaucratic<\/a> rationalizations before leaping to a fresh wave of expulsions, despite growing alarm around congressional sleaze.<\/p>\n<p>They say they\u2019re waiting for the conclusion of an active House Ethics investigation into Mills before moving to crack down on him \u2014 a similar approach they\u2019re taking with Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, who is set to hear her formal punishment from Ethics next Tuesday after the panel found her guilty of two dozen counts of misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a three part test \u2014 Has the member admitted to the conduct in question? Has there been a finding by a court? Or has there been a finding by the Ethics Committee?\u201d Republican Rep. Nick LaLota said. \u201cI don&#8217;t think that the Mills case meets any of those three criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there&#8217;s expulsion votes, if they&#8217;re political, I&#8217;m not interested,\u201d said Rep. Brad Schneider, the chair of the centrist New Democrat Coalition. \u201cIf they are based on facts established by process, I&#8217;m gonna follow the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mills said in an interview he had told Speaker Mike Johnson he was \u201cunfairly lumped into this\u201d with Swalwell and Gonzales as well as with Cherfilus-McCormick. Unlike Cherfilus-McCormick, he is not facing a federal indictment. And unlike Swalwell and Gonzales, he is not facing charges of sexual misconduct \u2014 something Mills said Johnson has acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear where the investigation into Mills stands. Johnson told reporters Tuesday he is \u201clooking into\u201d it. Republicans have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/08\/06\/cory-millis-threats-allegations-gop-00496518\" target=\"_blank\"><u> quietly worried<\/u><\/a> about the accusations against Mills for some time, but the GOP\u2019s narrow House majority has complicated the prospect of leadership engaging in any sort of accountability.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 FISA lives to face its next test: <\/b>Johnson is figuring out how to move forward with a clean, 18-month extension of a key spy power \u2014 Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act\u2014 as several Republicans plan to vote against a procedural step up for consideration Wednesday.
