{"id":20455,"date":"2026-03-24T00:47:01","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T00:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/gop-senators-see-path-to-ending-dhs-shutdown-after-trump-meeting\/"},"modified":"2026-03-24T00:47:01","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T00:47:01","slug":"gop-senators-see-path-to-ending-dhs-shutdown-after-trump-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/gop-senators-see-path-to-ending-dhs-shutdown-after-trump-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP senators see path to ending DHS shutdown after Trump meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A group of Senate Republicans believe they&#8217;ve found a path to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/23\/dhs-shutdown-deal-pressure-00839528\" target=\"_blank\">ending the five-week Department of Homeland Security shutdown<\/a> after meeting Monday with President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Asked after the White House meeting if they had a solution after meeting with Trump, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/6774\" data-person-id=\"6774\">Katie Britt<\/a> of Alabama told reporters, \u201cWe do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Britt and Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/398933\" data-person-id=\"398933\">Bernie Moreno<\/a> of Ohio, <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51186\" data-person-id=\"51186\">Lindsey Graham<\/a> of South Carolina and <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/198810\" data-person-id=\"198810\">Steve Daines<\/a> of Montana met with Trump to try to pitch to accept an agreement that would fund most of DHS.<\/p>\n<p>Their pitch, according to two people with knowledge of it, was to pass a funding bill that would fund all of DHS except specific parts of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is already funded under last year\u2019s GOP megabill.<\/p>\n<p>Graham told colleagues on the Senate floor after the meeting that the president is now open to a new party-line reconciliation bill after rejecting the idea over the weekend, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/260075\" data-person-id=\"260075\">John Kennedy<\/a> (R-La.) said. That could give Republicans a path to pass more ICE funding \u2014 if they can muster the votes.<\/p>\n<p>The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. And Republicans cautioned that nothing is official until Trump backs it publicly.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> said \u201chope so\u201d when asked Monday night whether a deal was in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Proceeding with the arrangement with Trump\u2019s support would represent a U-turn from just 24 hours ago for the president, who <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116275668825285445\" target=\"_blank\">insisted Sunday<\/a> that DHS could be only funded if Democrats agreed to pass a partisan GOP elections bill, the SAVE America Act, alongside it.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats in both chambers have pressed Republicans multiple times to take up their bills that would fund all of DHS except ICE, Customs and Border Protection and the secretary\u2019s office. Republicans have rejected the efforts each time.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/151837\" data-person-id=\"151837\">John Hoeven<\/a> (R-N.D.), a senior appropriator, said there are &#8220;various options&#8221; for funding the department but is &#8220;hopeful&#8221; a solution was within grasp.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Republicans have put a lot on the table, and hopefully the Democrats will agree,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of Senate Republicans believe they&#8217;ve found a path to ending the five-week Department of Homeland Security shutdown after meeting Monday with President Donald Trump.
