Two years later, he\u2019s the presumptive GOP nominee \u2014 and his former foes are staying home as the GOP establishment moves to embrace him.<\/p>\n<p>Herrera, a gun shop owner and popular YouTuber known as \u201cThe AKGuy\u201d running in Texas\u2019 23rd Congressional District, has faced widespread criticism for past videos in which he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5KkD-nthF_0\" target=\"_blank\"><u>mimics a Nazi march to Nazi music<\/u><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5KkD-nthF_0\" target=\"_blank\"><u>jokes about the Holocaust<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0Cjnk1Cpp0M\" target=\"_blank\"><u>boasts about his 1939 edition of \u201cMein Kampf.\u201d<\/u><\/a> His 2024 opponent, Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/politics\/2024\/04\/21\/sotu-gonzalez-during-panel.cnn\" target=\"_blank\"><u>called him a \u201cknown neo-Nazi,\u201d<\/u><\/a> a characterization Herrera disputes. Concern over Herrera\u2019s comments were so severe that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee\u2019s United Democracy Project spent more than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/outside-spending\/detail\/2024?cmte=C00799031&amp;tab=targeted_candidates\" target=\"_blank\"><u> $1 million<\/u><\/a> two years ago and the Republican Jewish Coalition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/C00528554\/independent-expenditures\/2024?t0-search=herrera\" target=\"_blank\"><u>spent close to $400,000<\/u><\/a> to sink his campaign.<\/p>\n<p>But now, a scandal forced Gonzales to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/05\/tony-gonzales-texas-not-running-00816160\" target=\"_blank\"><u>drop out of the runoff<\/u><\/a>, and Herrera is the GOP nominee in the sprawling, GOP-leaning Texas border district, which President Donald Trump carried by a 17-point margin in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>And faced with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/07\/gonzales-is-out-in-texas-and-dems-see-a-chance-to-beat-the-akguy-00817739\" target=\"_blank\"><u>choice of a candidate they\u2019ve long accused of antisemitism<\/u><\/a> and a Democrat, these pro-Israel and Jewish groups are thus far choosing to sit on their hands.<\/p>\n<p>AIPAC, which backs both Democratic and Republican pro-Israel candidates and usually focuses its efforts in primaries, has not endorsed in the race. AIPAC spokesperson Deryn Sousa said in a statement only that the group would \u201ccontinue to assess where candidates across the country stand on issues that affect the U.S.-Israel partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the RJC, which only supports Republican candidates, won\u2019t get involved. \u201cThe RJC has a longstanding policy of speaking out against those who traffic in Nazi ideology, and this is another case,\u201d said RJC political director and spokesperson Sam Markstein. \u201cThe RJC opposed Mr. Herrera in 2024, and he will not get our support now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Markstein made clear it was likely they would sit the race out rather than oppose him in the general election. \u201cWe&#8217;ve never supported a Democrat, so that should tell you everything you need to know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/04\/tony-gonzales-runoff-texas-gop-primary-00811372\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Herrera finished as the top vote-getter<\/u><\/a> in Texas\u2019 March 4 primary and Gonzales dropped out, the GOP establishment has largely embraced Herrera.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, as lawmakers and donors socialized during a glitzy Mar-a-Lago fundraiser for the House Freedom Caucus, which <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FreedomCFund\/status\/2026025405900112374\" target=\"_blank\"><u>backed him in the primary<\/u><\/a>, Herrera made a triumphant appearance, according to an attendee granted anonymity to detail a private event and another attendee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realPParsons\/status\/2031915395783741867\" target=\"_blank\"><u>post on social media<\/u><\/a>. Trump announced his endorsement on social media the same night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon is strongly supported by many Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Texas, and Republicans in the US House,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116213110990414470\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Trump wrote<\/u><\/a>. \u201cHE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Mike Johnson and House GOP leadership followed a week later, calling him an \u201cAmerica First grassroots leader\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mikejohnson\/status\/2034751918937907496?s=46\" target=\"_blank\"><u>joint statement Thursday<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s endorsement brings \u201ca little bit of comfort\u201d to pro-Israel GOP donors who view Trump as a loyal ally, said Gabriel Groisman, a Florida-based GOP donor active in pro-Israel circles. \u201cWe trust the president and his team in their vetting of congressional candidates,\u201d Groisman said. \u201cBut it doesn&#8217;t mean we don&#8217;t ask questions and we don&#8217;t dig further.\u201dAnd Groisman said that the &#8220;ugly truth about politics&#8221; is Jewish Republican donors are now faced with the option of him or a Democrat, rather than another Republican. &#8220;So the question is whether it&#8217;s better to have him in [office], or not. That&#8217;s a very, very difficult question to answer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Herrera criticized AIPAC\u2019s spending against him in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheAKGuy\/status\/1812995597743628480?s=20\" target=\"_blank\"><u>calling it \u201cIsrael first bullshit.\u201d<\/u><\/a> \u201cI\u2019m not anti-Israel, I\u2019m anti Israel buying American elections,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheAKGuy\/status\/1795916112942543135\" target=\"_blank\"><u>wrote on social media<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He has also been critical of U.S. policy toward Israel, arguing American taxpayers should not have to pay for military aid to Israel. We shouldn&#8217;t be spending a cent of taxpayer dollars on anything that is not either an investment or right here in the United States,\u201d he said in a speech, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.israelnationalnews.com\/news\/416733\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Israel National News reporte<\/u><\/a><u>d.<\/u> \u201cI don&#8217;t hate my neighbor just because I don&#8217;t want to pay his power bill. If they want to buy rockets from us, let&#8217;s sell to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Republicans\u2019 embrace of Herrera shows how seriously the GOP values maintaining control of the House this cycle, even as some Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/11\/02\/gop-leaders-denounce-antisemitism-but-say-real-problem-is-on-the-left-00632857\" target=\"_blank\"><u>warn of growing antisemitism<\/u><\/a> within their own ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Herrera\u2019s campaign has continued to publicly push back on criticisms of his social media history, which they contend are taken out of context from his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/07\/gonzales-is-out-in-texas-and-dems-see-a-chance-to-beat-the-akguy-00817739\" target=\"_blank\"><u>\u201cwork as a historical firearms educator\u201d and <\/u><\/a>omitting extended clips that include<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/07\/gonzales-is-out-in-texas-and-dems-see-a-chance-to-beat-the-akguy-00817739\" target=\"_blank\"><u> \u201ccomments ridiculing and condemning Hitler\u2019s book.\u201d\u00a0<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accusations against Brandon were bizarre and false, manufactured by a desperate political opponent who misleadingly cut and pasted together disparate video clips,\u201d Herrera campaign manager Kimmie Gonzalez said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Groisman, the Florida-based donor, said Herrera\u2019s allies are working to assuage concerns about his past statements through outreach to Jewish and pro-Israel donors in Texas and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#8217;re trying to send them what he has actually said, versus what people say he said, which they seem to claim that there&#8217;s a big delta there,\u201d Groisman said. \u201cThe concern is, are we, as a Republican Party, allowing in another potential Thomas Massie-type figure? Nobody knows the answer to that question.\u201d Massie, a Republican member of the House from Kentucky, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2023\/12\/06\/congress\/massie-zionism-patriotism-house-israel-00130383\" target=\"_blank\"><u>an outspoken critic of Trump and Israel<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Herrera\u2019s campaign confirmed he is looking for dialogue with those same groups that have attacked him for years \u2014 including the RJC.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Padilla Stout, the Democratic nominee in the district, has said that Herrera has \u201cconsistently been on the wrong side of history,\u201d citing content from his YouTube videos that mocked veterans and another video in which he tested Nazi weaponry. Padilla Stout has started to make allegations of antisemitism core to her attacks on her Republican opponent, as outside Democratic groups \u2014 like <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/housemajpac\/status\/2029629313306574884?s=46\" target=\"_blank\"><u>the House Majority PAC<\/u><\/a> \u2014 use his past videos as attacks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given his documented history of apparent anti-semitism, it&#8217;s no surprise our campaign has received an outpouring of support from people from all across the district and from both sides of the aisle, including support from the Jewish community,\u201d Padilla Stout\u2019s campaign manager, Yolitzma Aguirre, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the Republican officeholders who have warned loudly about growing antisemitism within their party dodged when asked about Herrera.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/12\/01\/jewish-donors-gop-israel-and-antisemitism-00670406\" target=\"_blank\"><u>has vowed to take on any Republican congressional candidate<\/u><\/a> who espoused antisemitism, but when asked about Herrera said \u201cI don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re talking about, in terms of what he said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who denounced podcaster Nick Fuentes as a \u201cgoose-stepping Nazi\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/10\/ted-cruz-tucker-carlson-reignite-feud-as-iran-war-heats-up-00821384\" target=\"_blank\"><u>during a speech last week<\/u><\/a>, has stayed out of the primary, even as he endorsed in other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-election\/sen-ted-cruz-endorses-gop-primary-challenger-rep-dan-crenshaw-rcna260533\" target=\"_blank\"><u>U.S. House races<\/u><\/a> in his state. He said questions about Herrera\u2019s statements or actions should be directed to Herrera himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#8217;t seen the video you&#8217;re discussing, and so you&#8217;re welcome to ask him those questions,\u201d Cruz said in a brief interview last week.<\/p>\n<p>When asked how he would advise Texas voters to cast their ballot in Herrera\u2019s race, Cruz refused to answer. \u201cThose are the exact same questions a Democrat tracker would ask,\u201d Cruz said before walking away. His office declined to elaborate on his answers.<\/p>\n<p>While Republicans circle the wagons or duck the topic, a Jewish Democratic group that rarely plays in districts like this is thinking about investing in trying to defeat Herrera.<\/p>\n<p>The Jewish Democratic Council of America is considering getting involved in the heavily Republican district, which would deviate from their norm of engaging only in districts with significant Jewish voter populations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there was ever a chance that a Democrat could win a seat like this, maybe it&#8217;s in these midterms,\u201d said JDCA president Hailie Soifer. \u201cSo it is something we&#8217;re looking at.
