{"id":19917,"date":"2026-03-12T12:17:18","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T12:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-house-revolt-ahead-for-housing-bill\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T12:17:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T12:17:18","slug":"capitol-agenda-house-revolt-ahead-for-housing-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-house-revolt-ahead-for-housing-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitol agenda: House revolt ahead for housing bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Senate is on track to easily pass a housing affordability package Thursday that is dead in the House as is \u2014 an ominous sign for any GOP affordability measures.<\/p>\n<p>The bipartisan package, aimed at lowering high housing costs, is expected to sail through the Senate after an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/03\/10\/congress\/senate-tees-up-bipartisan-housing-package-for-final-passage-00821289\" target=\"_blank\">89-9-1 procedural vote<\/a> earlier this week. But the bill\u2019s ultimate fate remains dire \u2014 as does the GOP trifecta\u2019s ability to make any legislative progress on affordability before the midterms.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 House issues:\u00a0<\/b>Freedom Caucus members warned they won\u2019t support the Senate version of the bill, with several likening some of its provisions to \u201csocialism.\u201d Their key concerns include a temporary ban on a central bank digital currency (they want it to be permanent) and a ban on institutional investors from owning single-family homes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are problems,\u201d Chair Andy Harris (R-Md.) said. \u201cIt\u2019s not as conservative a product as the House bill was.\u201d The House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/02\/09\/congress\/house-approves-housing-bill-setting-stage-for-tough-senate-negotiations-00772552\" target=\"_blank\">passed its own version in February<\/a> under a fast-tracked process with Democratic support.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged conservative objections to the Senate\u2019s housing bill during a closed-door, conference-wide meeting Wednesday at the House GOP retreat. He suggested the House and Senate would have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/03\/11\/congress\/mike-johnson-tells-house-republicans-housing-bill-could-go-to-conference-amid-fight-with-senate-00824571\" target=\"_blank\">go into conference negotiations<\/a> to iron out the problems, according to four people in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Mike Flood, chair of the Financial Services Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, echoed that sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am holding out hope for some fixes, but time runs short,\u201d the Nebraska Republican told Blue Light News in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014<\/b> <b>The Senate&#8217;s game plan: <\/b>Senators are moving ahead with their version \u2014 and largely ignoring the House-passed one.<\/p>\n<p>Many don\u2019t support the community banking provisions in the House version. The Senate version also includes the institutional investor provision that President Donald Trump requested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we\u2019ll need a conference. I think we\u2019ll get it worked out,\u201d Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said.<\/p>\n<p>For now, senators appear to believe the White House \u2014 including the president \u2014 will help get House GOP colleagues on board. To their credit, they\u2019ve seen this movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/07\/03\/congressional-republicans-cave-megabill-big-beautiful-00439956\" target=\"_blank\">many times before<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf one side, Senate or House is being unreasonable, the White House may have to slap a couple of people to Pluto,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cBut we\u2019re not there yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate is on track to easily pass a housing affordability package Thursday that is dead in the House as is \u2014 an ominous sign for any GOP affordability measures.
