Privately, many are worried."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The vast majority of congressional Republicans are publicly supportive of President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to launch a war on Iran. But many are harboring private misgivings about the risks to American troops and global stability \u2014 as well as their own political fortunes \u2014 should the military campaign drag on indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s comments this week that the bombing could last \u201cfour to five weeks\u201d or more, that he doesn\u2019t care about public polling and that the U.S. will do \u201cwhatever\u201d it takes to secure its objectives are among the factors that have put lawmakers on edge.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the anxieties have started emerging publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe constitutional sequence is, you engage the public before you go to war unless an attack is imminent. And imminent means like, imminent \u2014 not like something that&#8217;s been over a 47-year period of time,\u201d Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/253419\" data-person-id=\"253419\">Warren Davidson<\/a> (R-Ohio), a former Army ranger, said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/407516\" data-person-id=\"407516\">Eli Crane<\/a> (R-Ariz.), a combat veteran who served in the Iraq War and has cautioned in the past against regime change efforts, called it \u201ca very dicey, a very dynamic situation right now\u201d on the Charlie Kirk Show Monday while also making clear he would give Trump deference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope it works out,\u201d he added. \u201cMilitary operations like this can go sideways so fast, you know, it will make your head spin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But a wider group of House Republicans granted anonymity to speak candidly shared deeper concerns about the strikes. All said they would stand with Trump and Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">Mike Johnson<\/a> this week to oppose a largely Democratic effort to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/28\/iran-votes-congress-war-powers-00805732\" target=\"_blank\">force votes on restraining the president<\/a>. But they said their support was not guaranteed over the long term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost Republicans want clear objectives, clearer than they are now,\u201d said one House Republican, who added members have pressed GOP leaders and White House officials to be more consistent in articulating the administration\u2019s military goals.<\/p>\n<p>Another was troubled by Trump\u2019s own shifting statements on when the bombing campaign might wrap up, whether he is seeking the fall of the Islamic regime and whether ground troops might ultimately be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds a little bit like President Lyndon Johnson going into Vietnam, doesn&#8217;t it?\u201d the lawmaker said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/u-s-congress-96900.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-portal-copyright=\"Francis Chung\/POLITICO\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"0\" data-license-id=\"25259800396900\" data-licensor-name=\"AP\" data-title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>Trump officials and top House GOP leaders have already moved to ease potential member concerns. Johnson, for instance, said leaving a classified briefing Monday that \u201cthe operation will be wound up quickly, by God\u2019s grace and will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is our prayer for everybody involved,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/03\/02\/congress\/trump-iran-house-memo-00807401\" target=\"_blank\">White House memo<\/a> sent to congressional Republicans Monday outlined several military objectives for the bombing campaign and said Trump should be \u201ccommended\u201d for taking on a hostile state sponsor of terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>But despite denying that Trump had acted in pursuit of regime change, the document also said the Iranian regime \u201cwould be defeated\u201d and included other contradictory statements about the reasons for the strikes \u2014 while trying to sidestep the question of whether the strikes constituted a \u201cwar,\u201d a word Trump himself has used.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the fears of a prolonged military engagement that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/03\/03\/congress\/top-republican-signals-iran-supplemental-may-be-coming-00808588\" target=\"_blank\">could be costly in dollars<\/a> and American lives, Republicans are also facing the prospect of a stock market tumble and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2026\/03\/03\/congress\/energy-cost-concerns-00808712\" target=\"_blank\">rising gas prices<\/a> that could fall hardest on vulnerable incumbents ahead of the midterms. Many of those members promised their constituents, much as Trump did, that they would not engage in endless war.<\/p>\n<p>The planned Thursday vote on a bipartisan war powers resolution has surfaced some of the GOP discomfort, even as party leaders and White House officials whip members against it \u2014 including those most at risk of losing their seats.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/198835\" data-person-id=\"198835\">Thomas Massie<\/a> (R-Ky.), who is co-leading the war powers push with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), pointed to the White House memo as further evidence of incoherence on the administration\u2019s part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo they\u2019re going to defeat a terrorist regime that rules a country of 90 million people, but that\u2019s not war?\u201d he said in an interview.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/white-house-79992.jpg\" alt=\"Johnson argued Monday it would be \" data-portal-copyright=\"Francis Chung\/POLITICO\" data-has-syndication-rights=\"0\" data-license-id=\"26062006579992\" data-licensor-name=\"AP\" data-title=\"Johnson argued Monday it would be \"><\/p>\n<p>Also raising concerns in advance of the vote is Davidson, who has long railed against extended U.S. wars abroad. He said in a social media post Monday it was \u201ctroubling\u201d that Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday that an imminent Israeli attack on Iran forced the U.S. to strike. He also raised concerns to reporters Tuesday about some of the administration&#8217;s claims.<\/p>\n<p>House Intelligence Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/148088\" data-person-id=\"148088\">Rick Crawford<\/a> (R-Ark.) said in an interview Tuesday he didn\u2019t think the war powers vote was necessary and that Trump was operating within his legal authority.<\/p>\n<p>The vote, he said, was \u201ca way for individuals to sort of register their displeasure or make a political statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if the war powers measure is defeated, some Republicans say an effort to restrain Trump could reemerge if the conflict drags on or Trump commits ground troops to the conflict. \u201cIf we\u2019re talking months, not weeks, then you will see another vote,\u201d said a third House Republican who added that Trump had some \u201cleeway\u201d for now.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, meanwhile, is channeling any intraparty concerns about Trump\u2019s war into another vote this week on a stalled Homeland Security spending bill \u2014 an attempt to keep the focus on Democrats\u2019 opposition to funding for TSA, FEMA and other agencies as a department shutdown approaches the three-week mark.<\/p>\n<p>He is also arguing, as he told reporters after a classified briefing Monday, that the war powers vote is \u201cdangerous\u201d at a moment when U.S. troops were in harm\u2019s way and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/03\/02\/rubio-says-congress-is-in-the-loop-on-iran-attacks-00807876\" target=\"_blank\">Republicans would act to \u201cput it down.\u201d<\/a> The strikes, Johnson added, did not need advance congressional approval because they were \u201cdefensive in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those arguments have resonated with most House Republicans, who say they\u2019re willing to give the president time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so far, the Pentagon seems to have a good plan,\u201d said Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/86201\" data-person-id=\"86201\">Jeff Crank<\/a> (R-Colo.), a member of the Armed Services Committee who said he would give Trump \u201csix weeks or \u2026 eight weeks or whatever we need to accomplish the missions that we set out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst thing we could do is go in and then \u2026 to pull back or cut short, whatever our objectives are,\u201d he added. \u201cWe&#8217;re there.
