{"id":18818,"date":"2026-02-10T13:01:47","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T13:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-democrats-demand-more-from-gop-on-dhs\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T13:01:47","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T13:01:47","slug":"capitol-agenda-democrats-demand-more-from-gop-on-dhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/capitol-agenda-democrats-demand-more-from-gop-on-dhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Capitol agenda: Democrats demand more from GOP on DHS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Do we have a negotiation or a stalemate?<\/p>\n<p>The answer to that question will determine whether the Department of Homeland Security shuts down in just four days, and Tuesday morning, it\u2019s not entirely clear which way things are headed.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries panned a White House counterproposal sent to them Monday evening as too light on details for how to rein in President Donald Trump\u2019s immigration enforcement agenda.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 Dems vs. White House:<\/b> \u201cThe initial GOP response is both incomplete and insufficient in terms of addressing the concerns Americans have about ICE\u2019s lawless conduct,\u201d the leaders said in a statement. \u201cDemocrats await additional detail and text.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s far from a \u201chell no,\u201d but expect to hear more later Tuesday morning on where Democrats stand after Jeffries and Schumer meet with their respective caucuses.<\/p>\n<p>Neither side is saying exactly what the GOP counter to the 10-point Democratic offer entails, but White House allies made clear Monday that one key Democratic demand \u2014 requiring federal law enforcement officials to obtain judicial warrants before entering private property \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/02\/09\/a-complete-non-starter-white-house-draws-red-lines-in-dhs-funding-talks-as-shutdown-looms-00772302\" target=\"_blank\">dead on arrival<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Other Democratic asks \u2014 including a mask prohibition, ID display requirements and limits on places where agents can operate \u2014 would need major concessions from Democrats to make them palatable for the administration, several people close to the White House said.<\/p>\n<p>But the trading of offers is giving GOP leaders optimism that a deal is possible. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he\u2019ll probably get the ball rolling on a continuing resolution Tuesday to give negotiators more time to strike a deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<b> About that CR:<\/b> Whether a stopgap can pass depends almost entirely on the tenor of DHS talks come Thursday, when senators are hoping to leave town.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans need at least seven votes from Senate Democrats to prevent a DHS shutdown, and some Senate Democrats continue to signal they could be convinced \u2014 if there\u2019s a bona fide negotiation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends on whether we\u2019re making progress or not,\u201d Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) told reporters Monday. \u201cWe\u2019ve got some time. Hopefully people will be working to try and get something done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also undecided is how long a short-term DHS funding punt might run. GOP appropriators want at least two weeks, but the exact length \u201cwill have to be negotiated,\u201d Thune said.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>What else we\u2019re watching:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 A high-stakes rule vote: <\/b>House GOP leaders will attempt to adopt a rule Tuesday that includes language to block votes on President Donald Trump\u2019s global tariffs through July after Democrats threatened to move as soon as Wednesday to overturn the president\u2019s levies on Canada.<\/p>\n<p>It could get hairy: Under the current member math, as few as two GOP defections could block adoption of the rule. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is a no. Keep an eye on Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 SAVE America Act inches forward: <\/b>The House will consider the SAVE America Act in Rules Tuesday despite the uncertain future in the Senate for the GOP elections overhaul. It\u2019s on track to hit the House floor Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The four Democrats who supported a version of the bill in April \u2014 Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Ed Case of Hawaii, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Jared Golden of Maine \u2014 have so far been mum on whether they will support the updated measure. Jeffries said House Democrats will discuss the measure Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u2014 DHS officials take the stand: <\/b>House Homeland Security Committee members will question DHS officials Tuesday morning for the first time since last month\u2019s fatal shootings of Ren\u00e9e Good and Alex Pretti sparked bipartisan backlash against the Trump administration. <\/p>\n<p>Acting director for ICE Todd Lyons, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Joseph Edlow will testify.<\/p>\n<p>While Democrats are expected to give the officials a fierce grilling, some Republicans will also likely push them for more clarity on ICE operations.<\/p>\n<p><i>Myah Ward, Alex Gangitano, Jordain Carney, Meredith Lee Hill and Mia McCarthy contributed to this report.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do we have a negotiation or a stalemate?
