{"id":17664,"date":"2026-01-13T17:16:49","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T17:16:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/gop-leaders-throw-cold-water-on-trumps-credit-card-push\/"},"modified":"2026-01-13T17:16:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T17:16:49","slug":"gop-leaders-throw-cold-water-on-trumps-credit-card-push","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/gop-leaders-throw-cold-water-on-trumps-credit-card-push\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP leaders throw cold water on Trump\u2019s credit-card push"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/51242\" data-person-id=\"51242\">John Thune<\/a> and Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.politicopro.com\/member\/242539\" data-person-id=\"242539\">Mike Johnson<\/a> voiced skepticism Tuesday on President Donald Trump\u2019s move to temporarily cap credit card interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that would probably deprive an awful lot of people of access to credit around the country,\u201d Thune told reporters. \u201cCredit cards would probably become debit cards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s not something I&#8217;m out there advocating for \u2014 let&#8217;s put it that way,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Thune\u2019s comments come after Trump posted on Truth Social that he was calling for a one-year cap of 10 percent interest on credit cards starting Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also appeared to tamp down the prospects for immediate action Tuesday, telling reporters he spoke to Trump about it on Monday. He called it among a &#8220;long list&#8221; of affordability ideas Trump has in mind<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president is the ideas guy,&#8221; Johnson said, adding later, &#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t get too spun up about ideas that are out of the box, that are proposed or suggested.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson also raised similar concerns as Thune, saying credit-card issuers \u201cwould just stop lending money\u201d if rates are capped.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the proposed temporary cap on interest rates, Trump has also thrown his weight behind a long-controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/06\/02\/congress\/crypto-senate-genius-act-swipe-fees-00380677\" target=\"_blank\"><u>bill limiting credit-card merchant fees<\/u><\/a> sponsored by Sens.
