{"id":17443,"date":"2026-01-08T18:01:49","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T18:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/the-5-republicans-who-voted-against-trump-on-venezuela\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T18:01:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T18:01:49","slug":"the-5-republicans-who-voted-against-trump-on-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluelightnews.com\/category\/politics\/the-5-republicans-who-voted-against-trump-on-venezuela\/","title":{"rendered":"The 5 Republicans who voted against Trump on Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Five Senate Republicans joined with Democratic lawmakers in a surprise rebuke of President Donald Trump Thursday, voting to advance legislation that would force the commander in chief to seek Congress\u2019 OK before taking any additional military action in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a closer look at each of the GOP lawmakers and how they explained their votes:<\/p>\n<p><b>Rand Paul of Kentucky:<\/b> Paul was a co-sponsor of the war powers measure and has been outspoken in his concern across multiple presidencies that the executive branch has overstepped its authority to use military force without congressional consent.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lisa Murkowski of Alaska:<\/b> She sided with similar Democratic-led war powers measures in the past, lamenting that White House officials have not provided enough legal justification for attacks on drug traffickers or for the operation to remove Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n<p><b>Susan Collins of Maine:<\/b> Collins said <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenatorCollins\/status\/2009308410836140088?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a> that voting to limit presidential powers was \u201cnecessary\u201d because of Trump\u2019s recent comments about potentially using ground troops and a sustained military engagement in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p><b>Josh Hawley of Missouri:<\/b> Hawley similarly said that Trump\u2019s \u201cboots on the ground\u201d comments illustrated the need to reinforce Congress\u2019 role in approving future military actions.
